I took pictures at our family thanksgiving for those wanting family or individual Christmas pictures. (They turned out great). I didn’t charge a sitting fee just the price of any prints they order. Some have asked to purchase digital copies. I’ve never sold digital files before so not sure what to charge. What is the going rate?

What form would the digital copies take? Would you email them or put them on a disk or flash drive? If I were in that position, with relatives wanting to compensate me for my time and expertise, I would first include the cost of any media - disk or flash drive. If I had a set of family pictures from the event, I might charge $10 for the bunch. That's just off the top of my head.

If these pictures are for family then why not put the photos on a disc and give them to family members? Sorry but from reading your post these people are family. IF you were in a studio and IF you were/are a professional photographer who does this type of photography for money, then I could see charging them your standard fee. But if these are just photos you took at your family get together then I don't understand why the charge. Perhaps I am missing something here.

What format / resolution are you planning? If you give full-size ready for printing, that should have a higher price than lower resolution appropriate only for online / social media use. For social media, probably $5 to less than $10 for individual image or a flat fee for a group. Then, $20 - $30 for a full-resolution, particularly if you've added value in editing.

But, are you saying you're charging your family members? Wouldn't anything above $0 cost more trouble than money received?

My rates for family is free. Very close friends just have to cover the cost of printing. What this collective group adds to my life is far more valuable.

For family and friends - expenses plus whatever they want to "tip". I do provide digital copies.

I do not charge family for anything, including prints and frames. They're family and that's that. My charge(s) for digital copies depend upon many things, including intended use. There is a wide (price) gap between personal and commercial use. Best of luck.

I set up my backdrop, lights and camera in my suite where we all stayed and I extended the offer in advance. They came color coordinated ready for family Christmas pictures. I’m not trying to sell the pictures I took during our dinner and fellowship time just the pics they sat for. I do small jobs like setting up at events and sell prints on site, head shots and family pictures. I have a small studio in my home. I do this very part time.

If it were just a small print or two, free would be fine. First of all our family is very large. Here’s an example of one relatives shoot. Mother alone, mother with each child(4), mother with 1 child and niece, mother with sister, mother with children, children alone, mother with sister and their mother and children with cousins. This was the the extreme but several family members took several variations. This was not a problem that’s why I set up, for family picture. They came knowing there was a charge for prints. That’s why I posed the question. Most just want prints but some just want digital. No concern about copyright or commercial use. I’ve messaged copies to family before that they have posted on social media and they always state photos by me. I just think it wouldn’t be fair for some to pay and others not.

I have been ask to bring my camera to some weddings and just take random shots after the wedding. Usually there a two hired photographers working the wedding. They take great pictures. I am very much an amateur and try to stay out of the way. Some times I take 300 pictures, not all keepers. After I go through the pictures and adjust some then I give the parents a stick so they can see pictures immediately. I would never and have never received a dime from a friend or family member. The pros really have great pictures and do a great job. However if you take pictures to make extra money, different story.

Family is free. A nice framed family print makes a great gift.
