Siberian Ground Squirel

They are not common in the Netherland but years ago they escaped while on transport to another Zoo, now we have a large population in the forest , I was very happy to spot a few and was able to photograph them.

It looks very similar to the North American chipmunk. But nice photo!

Are they like our chipmunks? We had those on Indiana, and he looks alot like them. He's really cute!

Good capture! I like the texture of the moss and tree bark as well. Looks a lot like our chipmunks, common here, don't need zoo specimens!

Interesting fact:

They're kin to squirrels

Weighing in at 1 to 5 ounces, chipmunks are the most diminutive members of the squirrel family, according to the National Wildlife Federation. That means these pocket-sized rodents are also related to woodchucks and prairie dogs, which share a branch on the squirrel family tree as well.

Yes , I have seen similar animals in the area Seattle and Vancouver , these are original from Siberia (Russia )

I'm glad for these little ground Squirels that they could escape and now can roam around freely in the forest, as I said they are not common over here but now we can spot them in nature and not in a Zoo!
