If you can find yourself a good used D7200, your short buffer problem will pretty much go away..This is one of the major differences over the D7100..All the controls and feel is pretty much the same! You'll really see the difference while shooting sports!

If you look at the card, you may see a number near the top of the card. The higher that number is, the faster the card. I. E. I’m using a SanDisk 32 sdhc card. To the left of the sdhc designation, it says “300 MB/s”. That means it’s a very fast card. I have other SanDisk cards that say 95. The high number will speed buffering in burst situations. I just learned about this when taking a sports action class.

I'm still shooting with these (SanDisk 32 GB Ultra PLUS Class 10 UHS-1 SDHC Memory Card - 80mb/s) @ approx. $12 a pop and they keep up with my Sony and Nikon bodies. Since I am trying to move up to a used D7000/7100 (still working on that), I did read that the 7100 buffer fills up faster than the 7000 or 72/7500. My Sony A37 (7 fps) works well with that card. I'll admit right off, I don't do burst mode very often, so YMMV.

Thanks to all who've responded. I ordered a Sandisk extreme pro 64GB sdhc card yesterday, for about thirty bucks. I should get it on Wednesday and I'll run some trials.

I don't shoot burst mode that frequently, and, as noted earlier, I'm not shooting Formula 1 cars. But I'd like more than 2-3 shots at a time during burst operations. I'll post my test results here.

Good luck Andy. I use the same cards on my 5D3 and have found them to be fast enough so that they aren’t the bottleneck, very reliable, and priced very competitively. You'll note from the link I posted that the longest bursts are possible shooting JPEG only (smaller files), then raw, and finally raw+JPEG. After optimizing the card and perhaps shooting raw (or JPEG if you prefer) only rather than raw+JPEG in those situations where you need burst speed more than a backup card, your next step if you still can’t get the burst length you need is to trade up to a D7200 - as has already been mentioned, it has a deeper buffer. One last hint. Not sure if it’s true on your body, but on some, you must actually remove the 2nd card to get the longer burst, rather than just turning off the writes to it - worth a quick experiment to see.

I only shoot RAW, and generally use the second slot for overflow unless I'm shooting some "once in a lifetime" event, wedding or somesuch… where I switch to backup. If speed continues to be a problem, I'll just have to sacrifice RAW on sports shots, but I would really rather keep it. I figure if I can get a five to six shot buffer, I'll be more than happy. At least until that contract offer from SI comes in.

As I said, I don't really "need" long bursts, and I absolutely love my 7100, so I don't expect to be trading up soon - my wife needs to get her D7100 first. Although..... what if I got a 7200 and gave her my 7100?
