Gaudi's Sagrada Familia to receive building permit - for $41 Million.

The famed Basilica of Sagrada Familia is to finally receive a building permit from the city of Barcelona after 130 years of construction in a legal limbo. Apparently when construction started in 1883, the Cathedral was located in a rural area with little in the way of administrative oversight. The area was subsequently incorporated into the city of Barcelona, but construction was never officially licensed by the City.

Now, with over 4 million visitors a year the city is prepared to grant a permit for Gaudi's masterpiece, but with a price tag of $41 Million for infrastructure improvements to the surrounding area.

I think if you only ever got to see one building in Europe, it should be the Sagrada Familia.

Probably the most memorable place I've visited. St. Peter's was magnificent, but Gaudi's masterpiece is a fascinating place to visit.

...on my bucket list, for sure. Gaudi's colleague, Jujol had a hand in many of his creations, many say a "lighter touch" but, on his own, actually completed a few Gaudiesgue creations around the area. So, between the two, there's alot to be seen...and photographed!

Very nice place. When they finish it in another 243 years I would like to get some shots of the outside without the cranes. The stained glass from the inside in the late day sun is a phenomenal capture.
So many features to shoot on the outside too.

It is scheduled to be finished in 2026. So save your pennies. I visited earlier this year and it was absolutely fantastic. Plan to go back in 2027 (if I can still travel!).

When my sister was in Barcelona she bought a book of all of Gaudi's wonderful buildings and creations. Definitely a man ahead of his times.

I've seen many buildings in Europe, including Gaudi's SF cathedral. The summer I spent studying Architecture in Paris in 1979 was the year I visited Barcelona and photographed the SF. It was interesting but not as stunning as it is now due to continued construction over the past 40 years. The permit cost is an outrageous shake down. Building and planning departments are always looking for ways to steal money from developers and property owners to fund infrastructure costs. This was a huge heist they just couldn't resist. Extortion basically.

I loved the illumination provided by the stained glass when we toured it in April. The colors vary from one side of the sanctuary to the other side.
