The rule of odds states that images are more appealing when there are an odd number of subjects (I'm not sure what you do when you have 4 grandkids--who do you leave out?). While this is not so easy when shooting "real life" it is easy to do when composing still life photos. I went through my archives and find that I shoot alot of single subjects, but I did find some that seem to fit this rule of composition. I'd like to see your shots and get your ideas on whether this rule of composition really works or not! Have fun.

I have, honestly, not heard of this as a visual rule. But as I look at some of my favorite images, I do find that a lot of them contain an odd number of subjects. Maybe this is because 1 is an odd number....

Kate, Rule of odds works. Think about it. If you had two SandHill Cranes your eyes would ping pong back and forth between the two. If you have three your eye rests to take in the 3. I support the rule of odds.

I lost a photo contest because I had a photo of an even number or wagon wheels propped against a rail fence. They said I needed 3 or an odd number to win with this photo. I was very disappointed but will pay attention to the "odd" number rule.
