Love da Duke. Kirk Douglas and da Duke once made a motion picture together. It was no secret that they disliked each other's politics. Mr. Douglas at the the conclusion of the filming made the comment that "John Wayne actually thinks he is John Wayne."

A similar personal observation of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery, was made by Winston Churchhill during WWII.. Churchill said of Montgomery that "there for the grace of God, goes God."

It is said that the American General George Patton detested Montgomery..but so did many of the British top brass. It seems only the men he commanded respected him.

Two cinematic legends, John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, team up to seize a
small fortune in gold in this action-packed western classic. Wayne plays
Taw Jackson, a range-hardened rancher who's hell-bent on capturing the
infamous War Wagon, an ironclad stagecoach protected by a small army
of men and owned by a thieving cattle baron who robbed Taw of his gold
and good name years before. To get even, Jackson recruits Lomax (Kirk Douglas),
a brash gunslinger, and a raucous crew of misfits and readies them to pull off one
of the most impossible heists of all time.

My favorites, in no specific order: Sands of Iwo Jima, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, Rooster Cogburn, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Fort Apache and maybe the best Western ever made, Red River.

Agree on Red River. This is a much darker John Wayne than we are used to. I love the chuck wagon scene where they sit around discussing what they need to do. Howard Hawks used overlapping dialog, a technique he repeated in the "The Thing From Outer Space."

Husband's favorite is "The Searchers". I painted scenes from 'The Quiet Man" all the way around a HUGE den in a 26 room home once, because it was the favorite of the owner who is Irish. The den was bigger than 4 average dens. Then I went to his large office and painted Irish scenes with rock walls and sheep all around. I think my husband has seen the searchers so many times he can quote every word!

Working together for the 12th time, John Wayne and director John Ford
forged The Searchers into an indelible image of the frontier and the men
and women who challenged it.
Wayne plays ex-Confederate soldier Ethan Edwards, a believer more in
bullets than in words. He's seeking his niece, captured by Comanches
who massacred his family. He won't surrender to hunger, thirst, the
elements or loneliness. And in his obsessive, five-year quest, Ethan
encounters something he didn't expect to find: his own humanity.

Nice collection. I loved those old westerns - and non-westerns.

How many people know that movie "The Searchers" is base on fact. I just finish reading "Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and Rise and Fall of the Comanches". In the book is a story of a Cynthia Ann Parker and a person name James Parker. Cynthia Ann Parker was a white girl kidnap by Comanches and James Parker was her uncle. James Parkers spent years looking for Cynthia Ann, never found her. Cynthia Ann Parker was Quanah Parker's mother.

As a WWII, Occupation of Germany and Korean war vet, I say it's too bad Wayne soiled his persona and movie career by being a WWII draft dodger when other male movie stars with greater fame did serve.
