Although there is some question as to the origin of this beautiful melody, Mario Lanza gives it the vocal justice it deserves.

The popular version is that it was written in tribute to the British soldiers who fought in WWI. Also in tribute to the marvelous non-military folks who worked in factories producing military goods for the troops, and civilians (families and loved ones) who supported the troops, I'm reminded of Churchill's remark: "They also serve who only stand and wait!"

Churchill may have used the phrase, but it is from the poem On His Blindness by John Milton, a 17th century poet.

Kenneth McKellar also sang this song beautifully.
