Bob, could you expand on the caution that one should have? and what would be the risks involved?

I have a D7200 and would like to try older lenses, but your message made me hesitate

Thanks in advance

All of the advice on the UHH makes me hesitate. The only correct listings I trust are Ken Rockwell. Particularly regarding Nikon lenses.

I do trust, for the most part one or two others, but not many.

You bring up a good point that should be clarified for anyone else who has managed to read this far through the "flames".

Original poster was asking about D7000-series and higher Nikon cameras, which have built-in focusing motor.... aka "screw drive"... and are able to focus older Nikkor AF lenses (as well as modern AF-S.... latest models can handle AF-P lenses, too).

The Nikon D3000-series and D5000-series cameras do not have the in-camera focusing motor, so they cannot autofocus older AF lenses. In order to autofocus them, they require AF-S. The latest models also work with AF-P. (Note: AF-P are a relatively new series that are not fully compatible with some older camera models.) In most cases, the older AF lenses can be used manual-focus only on the D3000/D5000 cameras.

If at all in doubt and unable to try before you buy, best to check the Nikon lens/camera compatibility charts. Good, accurate info can be found several places online... including Nikon's own website, the Nikonians.org website and Ken Rockwell's website.

Don't over eat today!

I’m sorry, calling someone stupid is not polite or kind . I feel the very least we can do is be nice to each other. I understand this person has anger problems, but what is your issue. I am committed to helping this person work on his issues in this dark time in his life. God bless and happy thanksgiving.

Yup.

Wetreed is defo a bot ... cyber or flesh ... but a bot.

If flesh, just a brainwashed slave of some bogus faux
christian operation. But AI has progressed and I'm not
convinced he or it is a human operator.

Either way, this bot is not here to further the purposes
of this forum, and so the wetreed account is ought to
be canceled.

Repeatedly RE-posting blatantly wrong info is just a
wedge for posting "evangelical" BS. Note the quote
marks. No insult intended to the Real Thing.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all, even if you do not have a thorough understanding of different camera manufacturers equipment.

Seems you ought to trust stuff backed by
users' specific experience. For instance, I
really don't imagine you "distrust" due to
folks intentionally lying to you. I suppose
you distrust the members' claims to know
what they're talking about. I don't blame
you. That is very WELL FOUNDED distrust.
Bogus claims of expertise overflow the
sewers around here :-(

OTOH, if someone tells you that they have
regularly used their shaft driven AF lenses
on their D750 and D610, then those would
be well informed members, not just poorly
informed "advisers" who "know" only what
they read somewhere [maybe here ... god
help us]. Problem with "read only" type of
of "advisers" is that they apparently have
reading comprehension problems reading
about stuff not familiar to them, and then
they pose online as experts.

Frinstintz, I use the following shaft drive
AF lenses on D750 and D610 bodies, with
full AF, metering etc. CAVEAT ! Altho these
lenses have normal f/stop rings, on THESE
bodies you do NOT use the ring.
You set
the minimum aperture and always control
the f/stop using the in-body controls. If
you turn the f/stop ring to set your stops,
you will not get the expected result.

Lenses actually used [by me] no problem:

Sigma 28/1.8
Sigma 90/2.8M
Nikon 50/1.4
Nikon 60/2.8M

Not claiming to be a "Nikon Expert". Just
reporting what actually works in real life.

I just bought a D7500 and I can not get any of My old lenses with the Aperture ring on the back of the lens to work says F ee on read out . I have camera on Manual and aperture ring at the highest number locked in.the shutter will not function. Would not have bought if I knew they would not work. My older Lenses work fine on my D7000.
Guess I will have to start buying more Lenses disappointing for me. Gary D

Assuming it is an auto focus lens , check to see if the small toggle near base of lens is set to " AF" NOT " M " Second in menu on settings for auto focus you may have it set to auto focus only before it will fire . This camera has no AI feeler for aperture control so you need to use it in stop down mode , you decided aperture and shutter speed I assume . If the lens is a auto focus lens , it should auto focus since it has an internal focus motor thats all I know , I have not owned a d7500 only the d7100 , I went straight to a D810. Only reporting on what I have read in reviews ...My older 300 mm lens aperture lock button on the lense sometimes unlocks and I get a Fee also and must relock to use the lens.....

According to Nikon, this could be user error,
a more hopeful thing than "buyer error".

Unless there's an error in Nikon's own chart.
