I primarily shoot Canon. I bought the Lumix GX85 for something light and it just didn't work for me. There was a technical problem as this type of camera is not for a left eye dominant person. My nose kept changing the setting - I could
disable it, but then it defeated the purpose of a touch screen. Non-related were two other issues. I got a lot of blown highlights which others have mentioned on the net. The last is I just didn't like the color - I would end
up spending a lot of time adjusting the color on the raw file. The jpgs straight out weren't that great. I ended up selling it to KEH and they advised that the resale on 4/3rds is not as good as Canon or Nikon. Before I
got rid of it I did look at the Olympus EM5 ii, its output and was impressed, but for right now I'm sticking with my Canon stuff and will wait to see what the new year brings. Hopefully Canon will get its act together on
mirrorless and its going to be interesting to see what Sony is up to on upgrading its app-c line. Good luck in your search

You are not alone, many photographers including professional ones are switching to mirrorless. I have been using Olympus mirrorless bodies for about 4 years and I could not be any happier.
For traveling light a mirrorless is very hard to beat. You can expect excellent quality in your photography.
If you do some wildlife or action photography the Olympus EM-1 Mk. II is among the best mirrorless cameras today for that purpose. Not all mirrorless cameras have phase detection AF at the level of the EM-1 Mk. II.
I am not familiar with the Panasonic GX-9 or the Pen F but I am sure you will not be disappointed in either one.
Good luck!

Pick up “Mastering the Olympus OMD ....” by Darrell Young published by Rocky Nook. I read it page by page and it was worth every minute spent! Great reference!

Not a highjack but just a shout out for Rocky Nook publishing... some of the best out there. " Mastering Photoshop Layers " by Juergen Gulbins is the best I have seen.

I picked up a G9 & Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 & Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for a recent 3 week trip to Northern Italy. This a very impressive light weight kit that yields beautiful photos of night, interior low light situations and of course city & landscapes. I carried a D750 with a 16-35mm f/4 for wide angle shots and for my purposes the IQ was comparable. I was so impressed I have a Panasonic Leica 8-18 f/2.8-4 arriving tomorrow. In most cases as long as you limit the ISO to 3200 and below you don’t have to worry about noise. Weight advantage is 34.5 ozs for the G9 & 12-60 vs 60.7 ozs for my D750 & Sigma 24-105 f/4 kit. I love the later kit and will keep it but no longer will I take it on overseas travel. The bulk size is also so much smaller and therefore it is a pleasure to travel with the 4/3 kit. Plus it is all weather sealed. I found the f/2.8 at the wide end eliminated the need for the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 for interior shots but not for night photos. Panasonic has a 3 year warranty on their cameras and lenses until next March, usually it is 1 year. Good luck.

dpreview and mirrorless comaprison have godd comparative reviews of the Panny g9 and Oly e-m1 mkii. The differences are not extreme, but there are some. Read them and choose by your priorities among these differences and by handling the two in a store. I myself went for the g9

I am considering adding micro 4/3 to camera equipment. I have a Nikon D7200 and several lenses and am satisfied with the Nikon system.

The purpose of adding micro 4/3 is to

1. have a lightweight camera for travel especially when photography is not the main purpose.

2. macro photography. A number of excellent macrophotographers are using micro 4/3.

3. An articulated viewfinder/screen. Yes I know the D7500 and D500 have these.

I am considering the Olympus Pen F and the Lumix GX9.

I would like your thoughts on micro4/3 and the relative merits of the two cameras.

You say you want M4/3 when photographing is not a priority you will be disappointed because M4/3 is for serious photography. Plus the Panasonic G85 with a 12-60 mm lens for $800 is going to be hard to beat

Look at some comparison sites before spending significant money. "Saving weight" might mean just a couple of ounces. As for the size, it's not going to fit into your pocket. Over the weekend, I wanted a small camera, but my A6000 won't fit into a pocket, so I brought my tiny Sony WX9 in a belt case.

Have the Oly OMD EM5mii...water resistant. When I used lenses that are water resistant (not all are) it works well in all weather...no need for protection. Works for me.

It's better to compare the EM1ii and the G9.

Jerryc41 I agree that most of the full frame mirrorless camera and lens combos do not save substantial weight over a DSLR but that is not the case with micro 4/3. My D750 & Sigma 24-105 f/4 weighs 60.7 ozs vs the G9 & 12-60 f/2.8-4 (24-120mm equivalent) weighing in at 34.5 ozs. Believe me that makes a big difference plus it is a great deal smaller when carrying it all day plus toting the gear through airports. I like the size and feel of the D750 & the Sigma but not for overseas travel.

I’m sorry, but you can get blown highlights with ANY camera. Color is subjective but there is nothing wrong with Panasonic colors. It maybe the operator not the gear.

I agree with Lagoonguy. My Oly EM1 Mark 1 with a 12-40mm f/2.8 pro lens weighs in at just under 2 lbs. My D750 Nikon with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is over 4 lbs. The Oly fits in a personal carry on with other essentials. When I'm flying, I take the Oly.

I purchased an Olympus E-M1MKII slightly over a year ago to go along with my well-accessorized Canon 5D MKII and Leica-Q. My reasons were similar to yours. I cannot speak to the specific models you mention. Having said that, I have many of my images printed 11 x 19 at high resolution, and to my pleasant surprise, the results using the M4/3 format have been so good that I sold all of my Canon gear. Sometimes I use the Hi-Res option with a tripod but many times not. The stabilization of the E-M1MKII is outstanding and the images I have captured in low-light without a tripod is comparable or better to my prior full frame Canon when being handheld at various ISO settings. As long as one keeps the ISO of the Olympus at or below 400, I doubt you will be disappointed. I frequently use the full frame Leica Q for landscapes but it has a fixed wide angle 28mm lens which can be limiting. Hope this helps...Cheers...Jack

I am a former Nikon user of many years, who switched almost 2 years ago to olympus EM1M2, and I love it. It does everything just as well or better than the 3 Nikon cameras that I got rid of, and I had some good ones, the d700, the D3, and the D810. I also have found the Oly pro lenses to be very good. It is so wonderful NOT to be carrying around all that weight.
