Dont bother, those vests are HOT!!! Suggest a camera backpac, jacket with a couple of big pockets or cargo pants. And if you have a camera you'll automatically look different than the cellphone shooters

I will be photographing some high school sports soon. Would it be good to wear a vest to hang my press pass on and carry around some crap? Kind of look the part and differentiate myself from the parents on the sidelines with cell phones and what not. Most of these vests are hilarious. What am I going to do with 21 pockets and zipper handles dangling everywhere? I was hoping to find something kind of simple. Do any of you guys wear them in this setting like sports or events?

Just having a serious looking DSLR with a decent and appropriate lens usually differentiates one from the cell phone crowd.
I would get a vest if that makes you look different from the crowd as well.
You don't need to load it up as you say but a few little accessories and a spare lens would fit well in it.
Have a monopod as well.

I use one often. Especially when I am flying for a photo trip. I put my id, passport, money in this. I do take 2 bags on the flight with all my camera gear so having the vest allows me to take more stuff.

Maybe look at some fishing vests instead, there are simple versions available, but are similar to photo vests in what they offer. They are problably also less expensive!

I concur. I have one. But have yet to use it. 😬

...and don't forget to look in sport stores under fly fishing. You can remove the little fuzzy cloth patch or leave it on.

I wear one quite often in the warmer months of the year, to help conceal my legally carried pistol.

I've got one my wife bought thru B & H that I have never worn. Too bulky. I shoot mainly macro and mostly flowers & bugs and rarely have to carry extra gear. Thus it never gets used. Still has the tags on it.

I use this travel vest: https://www.scottevest.com/shop/mens-vests/mens-rfid-vest/RFID-travel-vest-men.shtml. It is fairly light, and comfortable in a wide range of temperatures (not too hot). While not strictly designed for photographers, it has plenty of pockets to hold gear up to and including small lenses although I use zoom lenses and rarely “change in the field.” I bought mine slightly large to accommodate adding stuff. It is very well made and has survived a fair amount of travel abuse.

Is it necessary to differentiate yourself from the crowd, carry a press pass?

I love my vest! My son bought it for me on Ebay for $25 but I saw the exact same thing in Hunt's Camera Store for maybe $40. I wanted it especially for when I bring my camera on short hikes. Plenty of pockets for both pursuits. But I'm always losing things so to have things that close helps me focus, no pun intended. Yes it can be used as a fishing vest. I even can fit most of my DSRL in one of the top pockets with the zoom lens on! Go for it!

Have you ever been able to overcome the severe weight limitations on those small propeller planes in Africa by stuffing lenses or whatever in your vest pockets or do they weigh the vest too?

In the film days the vest was very handy and bordered on necessary. Now, not so much.
The need to differentiate the working photographer from the horde of cellphone and iPad folks is still very valid. If you've ever tried to shoot Dressage and had some women with a full size laptop hold it up in front of you to capture video of her daughters ride, you'd know you want to stand out.
I'd have a Velcro patch on the back and a set of different signs to stick on such as "Press" or "Official Photographer" or just the company name.
My sign now would just say "RETIRED".

What you wear matters. If you look the part, people will treat you like you belong there. Anecdote: in High School my brother and some friends dressed up in matching overalls, went to a dance at the opposing HS's gym with a large ladder. They did not pay to attend. They just walked in and during the dance, set up the ladder, detached the large tiger emblem on the wall and walked out. No one challenged them. No one.

If you look like "The Photographer" other people will give you space.

I found photography vests to be way overpriced for what you get. I was able to find a "fishing" vest at Wal-Mart for $15.00 which had all the pockets I'll ever need. I shoot mostly wildlife and this vest has held up well for the last four years.

I had to buy two vests. One made out of solid material and one made out of mesh. I use the mesh vest in hot weather and the solid vest in cooler weather. They are relatively inexpensive.
