Hi Folks, just recently took a trip to the Smokies but unfortunately it was cold, cloudy and rainy the whole time. We went ahead with our plans anyway and still enjoyed the scenery. I thought I'd share a few images. Keep in mind the overcast was pretty heavy, so the foliage colors are subdued because of that. Hope you enjoy them. Also, Thanks for taking the time to look and/or comment.

Hi Folks, just recently took a trip to the Smokies... (

Very nice. I really like the "industrialized" look of the dam and the building.
Nice scenics, James.
I was there in May--all fog and clouds--no sun.
Cloudy days have a tendency to rob image contrast. The result as you have seen is that many subjects do not look at its best and foliage happens to be one of them. Cloudy days also carry a tendency to reflect lots of light from the sky imparting a blue-cyan cast to the images.
Software can improve the quality of those images by a simple curve adjustment and slight color saturation to taste. Color balance adding equal amounts of red-yellow restores the right color balance to the shot.
When my shots are like this because of the weather, I add a little black with levels. Usually helps. It's as though it cuts through the moisture. Won't hurt to try!
Ya done good, James. In spite of my best efforts to get down there this fall, I have been stuck at home. Maybe next year.
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Really appreciate them.
An old photographer friend of mine used to say that, "light is everything". While I think it is the most important thing, subject matter, framing and composition come in a close second. We deal with, and make the most of what we are handed. You did good my friend, thanks for sharing your trip!

Nice set, especially give the weather you encountered. It has not been a pleasant fall here.
Beautiful landscape images. I thought that dam looked familiar as soon as I saw it.
Beautiful photos. Too bad nature deprives us so many times with cloud cover, rain and wind, which take the beautiful colors from us with few days for optimal photos.
We lived in Knoxville a year and went to the Smokies on a beautiful sunny day. Every tree was turned and leaves had not fallen yet. Best Fall photo day I ever saw.
