polarizers are bits of metal shards like fine dust in tinted glass.... you can achieve better results with PP because something you would usually wipe off your lens won't be present and the WB won't be tricked and rather more correctable for a properly exposed shot....unless color shifts to extreme blues and greens suit your taste, which is the most important aspect btw?

filters detract they can't add; sharpness, color balance, contrast, and WB are noticeably affected

there is more than one school of thought, the point

'filters make good lens caps only unless you shoot film'

"SHOOT THE GOLDEN HOURS OUTDOORS USE NATURE'S BUILT IN FILTERS"

polarizers limit reflected light, as with anything there is a cost and sharpness is one of those and in those cases one is better off mastering all of the noise reduction controls before adding clarity/sharpness in PP - reflected light from the chlorophyll in the leaves is just like tiny mirrors being present, so the optimum angle and ambient temperatures come during the golden hours where a filter would ruin that shot quite frankly? timing is "everything"

Filters are for compensating in when you should have been there for the shot....in other words second choice or plan B for those accustomed to being a day late and a dollar short

"nothing" beats being there at the right moment in light and certainly no filter has ever changed that theory....

I've got a hard case filled with about 200 of them in every size and shade known ...that's where they sit. If I know an image I made was with a filter, I can't get over that fact

Tip? A long lost artful practice of ensuring a shutter speed close to the focal length (or a little faster)..... 50mm 1/60th ? keeping the shutter speed a little faster than the number of the focal length used insures optimum clarity

Kinda looks to me like you didn't understand what your mother said, or are you somehow exempt.

"filters detract they can't add..."

One could also argue that post processing--or any manipulation to the image coming out of the camera--detracts, not adds to "optimum clarity." And a quality filter is just another optical element--in effect, another lens element. Is a five-element lens inherently inferior to a four-element lens? Multi-coated lenses are just lenses with some anti-glare/flare "filtration" built into the lens, so you are already filtering the image. Everything in front of the sensor (lens, filter, shade) can reduce the amount of post-processing (image manipulation) necessary for a good photograph. If I know an image has been post-processed, can I get over that fact?

Welcome to the UHH. You really should include some sample photos, with “Store Original,” and the most positive advice you’ve gotten in that regard is to NOT post it here in Main Discussion, as Admin will likely move it. Knowing that, it may be respectful to post in the appropriate section and save him the trouble.

Are you trying to say that if all the new members would seek out and read the forum rules they might be better at recognizing the difference between when an older member is making a valid and useful comment and when they're just making a smart remark??? Surely not!!! Whoa, what a concept.

For the benefit of newbies, Admin has few rules and generally has a "hands-off" approach to managing members freedom of speech but with 90000+ members he does like the few rules obeyed and does monitor what is posted in the various general sections and relies on highly skilled section monitors to watch the speciality sections such as macro.

With 90,000 members, it is anticipated that posts will be made in the appropriate section so as to not waste Admin's time having to move inappropriate posts to the appropriate section, hence wasting the time it takes to make the change and when that happens it might be construed as being not very respectable to Admin.

Perhaps it would have been better had there been an attempt to explain the remark that started the thread turning sour but then if new members would read the rules as it is anticipated they'll do out of respect for the rest of us, the comment about respect for Admin wouldn't have seemed out of order and they could have contained their urge to join in on the wrong side of the conflict. Reckon???

Wow. Read this with my morning coffee. Seemed to be an average "first post" by a newbie, looking for advice in a very general sort of way.

Come back at lunch and it's turned into a pissing contest between a virtual fire hydrant of venom, and a flood of those calling for respect, with a sprinkling of actual advice.

Here's mine, FWIW....

1) Always try to get some blue sky (or even a manmade object that's in the strong blue color range) for contrast into your photos. Fall colors don't really pop, to me, unless there is another splash of color from the opposite side of the color wheel. Some people are fine without it, but I think it makes the fall colors look stronger in a more natural way. Try a polarizer to enhance and darken the blue. Or try it selectively in post processing.

2) Try the Vivid color selection on your Nikon, and see if it makes a difference in your JPEGs. Some like the effect, but it's easy to overdo. I don't have a P900 but I've had other bridge cameras where this made a big improvement, others where it went crazy. I have used it on occasion on my DSLR Nikons when I wanted a quick image. If you do post processing, the color, saturation, vibrance, and luminance sliders are your friends, depending on what software you use. I guaranty the first shots you play with will be overdone a little.

3) Foliage looks best when lit from the side, overhead shots will often look a little washed out. Look for golden hour lighting in the morning or late afternoon instead of high noon.

4) Try underexposing by 1/3 to 1 full stop. You can also try this in post processing if you're unsure or don't have multiple exposures to play with.

5) Learn how to post images! It's pretty easy and it will cut the percentage of bad answers you receive.

6) It will take only a few posts for you to begin to separate those who want to offer advice and encouragement from those keyboard warriors who love to show off their alleged intellectual superiority by demeaning others. The former will jump right off the screen - but then you'll have to learn to sort the good advice from the bad! The latter need to have their mothers turn off the WiFi in the basement.

Don't let the grumpy old farts discourage you from asking newbie questions. The juice at UHH is worth the squeeze.

No worries, Ken. Ignore the grumpy old men and do some experimenting before they all blow away!

We're in the foliage capital of the world and our colors are rather less than spectacular this year...

Are you trying to say that if all the new members ... (show quote)

I thought Leitz’s suggestion was positive, and the negative reactions ignorant and of no help to the OP.
