I am considering purchasing an 85mm Sigma Art lens for use on my canon cameras. Does any one have experience with this lens or other Art lenses ? I would appreciate all feed back before I make this purchase.

Thanks in advance

I had the 18-35 1.8 and 24-105 4.0 in F mount. Excellent build and optics. Good choice if weight is not a concern.

Art Lenses are the bomb, better than their Canon equivalents. The 85mm that you are considering is reviewed as being one of the best in class, however, the Canon is no slouch at less than 1/2 the price. I assume that you are considering a portrait lens, personally I purchased the 135mm Art because I like the distance it affords me between the camera and my subject, I am not big on crowding people with my camera. I am however shooting a full frame, the 85mm would be close to the 135 on a crop camera and the 135 would in my mind be too long for portraiture on a crop camera. Luckily I also have the Canon 85mm also, it can be purchased so inexpensively now in the used market that it is better kept than sold as they are going for a song, so I can use both depending on the situation.

I have these lenses in 24, 50 and 85mm for my Nikons. I can't imagine that you'd be disappointed. Nothing else has been on my camera since getting them last winter, and I have some good optional glass. Great build and optics.

Must agree with the above. I was offered the 18-55 f/1.8 Art by Sigma, when they could not repair a 15-30 ff lens that would not focus beyond 10 ft. Never regretted getting the Art lens. Superior quality results.

I do not have the sigma 85 Art 1.4 but do have several Sigma Art lenses. These Art lenses are super high quality , and sharp as a tack and about 40% cheaper than canon. They are qual or better than canon in some parameters. However they are also very heavy and a bit slower to focus than the canon equivalent two somewhat difficult downsides especially for hand held portrait shooting. If your shooting full frame and for portraits I like the Canon EF 85 1.4L IS best it has an advantage in focus speed and lightness. If shooting a full frame and in studio with lighting and backdrops I use canon’s 100 mm f2.8L IS macro. The Sigma is as sharp, it’s way cheaper than the 85 mm canon 1.2 or newer canon 1.4 but much heavier and a bit slow on the focus.

On the Nikon the Sigma art lenses exhibit a different color cast than their Nikon counterpart.

I hope there is nothing wrong with the 85mm lenses made by Canon. The Sigma Art lenses, I use one for micro fourth thirds, are of excellent quality but I have always favored the lenses made specifically by the camera manufacturer. I bought the Art lens primarily because of the price since I do not do portraits now as often as I used to. When I was into portraits my camera was a Pentax 645.
I do not need an 85mm lens but if I was in need I would not hesitate a second buying Nikon.

I have three Sigma lenses for my 77d, and they all perform superbly!

They are 17-50mm f2.8, 30mm f1.4 and 10-20mm f3.5.
