Portrait mode in real estate photography?

Most real estate photographers stick with landscape orientation for their photos destined for their Multiple Listing Service (MLS). This is for several reasons. Each area MLS has different requirements or recommendations for image size and aspect ratio. My MLS in the greater Chicago area has evolved over the years from 640 x 480 (9 photos allowed per listing) to now 1980 x 1080 pixels (unlimited photos per listing). Most spaces are best presented in landscape (but not all). In many cases the MLS websites don't display "non-standard" sized images very well. They may clip off the top or bottoms (or both) to make vertical images fit. My MLS displays both orientations well when in full screen mode.

However, many interior spaces (and some exteriors) simply cannot be captured well except in portrait (vertical) orientation. Two-story foyers and fireplaces, tight powder rooms, high-rise exteriors, for example.

And, not all the photos we take for RE agents are intended for the MLS or web display. They use the best images for brochures and publications where vertical images work well.

Here's a few examples where landscape orientation would not have presented the space or building at its best.

Michael - Out of curiosity, where was the location of Image #5? I used to live on Clyde in Evanston just north of Touhy and buildings there closely resembled that. I know there are many similar buildings in the Chicago area. My first apt was at 142 Clyde, a three-story walk up.

This was 2040 N Spaulding Ave, in the Logan Square neighborhood. Yes, there are many many similar buildings throughout the Chicago-land area.

Having taken many photos for a real estate company in Maine years ago, I can appreciate your comments about the restrictions of the MLS (or realtor.com). Your photos are stunning!
