Does anyone know if there is a link where I could find a follow along instruction course for The d500. The guide would go thru the different options and what basic settings to begin with in different shooting situations. Lens suggestions need to be included and being able to use ones owned. Instructions to follow in a situation, whether it be portraits, inside, outside, fast action low light etc) a basic starting point is suggested then it would have you continue to follow other settings to fine tune and see. The exercises would detail for example, set the aperture on .... then take a shot, then change the aperture to.... or maybe the shutter adjustment if that didn't work. Setting, shooting then seeing the results with direction. Then if needs more corrections other options would be suggested and listed., ISO shutter speed etc. to try. Maybe this would more of a workbook to guide and to follow exercises that show the different results that occur. List of assignments in specific situations to test the setting options and which lens to try and see and learn to get the results you want.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer.
Happy Halloween.

You might be able to find such a book, but it would be generic, not just about the D500.

Take a look at Understanding Exposure, by Bryan Peterson. You library probably has it, or can get it. If you like it, it's available on Amazon.

Ditto on Dave o's recommendation Steve Perry at Backcountry Gallery is an excellent resource especially for Nikon shooters. His advice is so easy to understand and absorb. Get both of his books and look at his collection of You Tube videos and you will improve. I know i did.

Thank you so much for the leads and taking the time to help. Not all members (due to an earlier member response) are so helpful and kind. Quoting "99%" of UHH members would say use the internet and why ask such a question. Thank you for being the 1% and suggesting some resources.Appreciated.
Have a fun Halloween.

I wanted to add that to my recommendation list, but I realize it can be a turn-off. I frequently google different questions that I come across. You tube has been a help as well...realizing the info we seek may work for some and not all. The other method is seemingly redundant, but shoot, shoot, shoot...! Have specific goals or methods on a little card and follow them and note the results. View NX-1 is free and you get the settings you actually used with ease!

At least our film is cheap!

Creative Live (creativelive.com) offers a course taught by pro photographer John Greengo called "Nikon D500 Fast Start". In this course John Greengo goes over every button and every item in the camera's vast menu options. Sound boring? Not on your life! This course was exactly what i needed when i first bought my D500. He also teaches "Fast Start" courses on virtually every camera body regardless of model or make.

I like the book by Darrell Young "Mastering the Nikon D500". The book explains the settings in 642 pages that is explained in detail and understandable. And with each topic and setting, Darrell Young recommends settings he uses.

It is hard to beat this book. https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/david-buschs-nikon-d500-guide-to-digital-slr-photography-david-d-busch/1124623147?ean=9781681981482&st=PLA&sid=BNB_Nook%20Catch-All,%20Low&sourceId=PLABiNA&dpid=tdtve346c&2sid=Bing_c&msclkid=cc26c109d30a132c776a9ad321e4b0bb

With that out of the way. My favorite way to learn to use anything NEW is Utube video's.

Once the capabilities of a camera are learned and how to set the various options and use the menus, it will be much easier to apply that knowledge to achieve some of the basics being sought.

Learn the camera! Many of the responses are pointing in that direction!

This is indeed a MOST excellent course and worthwhile. John also has a lot of other webinars on CreativeLive and they are also worth watching. I used them for teaching some fellow photographers about landscapes

Thanks so much everyone. Totally forgot Creative Live which I have purchased several classes from. You tube also, I have learned many things by watching. I just thought that since the D500 is discussed so frequently there could be a "workbook" to follow and document the process and results in one location. A journal comes to mind. With camera and laptop in hand here I go. Thanks fellow members you have been very helpful, and I appreciate the time you gave. Will update later.
Happy 1st of November (year almost gone) rainy and cold in Indy with leaves coming down in grooves.
