I have been on vacation for a month and had been shooting with my D610 with a dual SD disks of which one is 64G for raw and another 32G for jpeg. During the course of my trip the 32G was pronounced full so I reformatted that disk thinking I have everything in my 64G and continued shooting.
After I came back from my trip I found out through Window Explorer and Faststone that some folders in my 64G are missing and I have lost more than 10 days of photos.
In my 64G, the DCIM shows 56.6G of 2,335 files in 4 folders, but inside DCIM, only one (249ND610) shows 14.4G of 606 files. Nothing in the Lost.dir. Where are my other 3 folders?
I am so afraid that that 40G+ of photo data has been lost permanently; stupidly I have reformatted the Jpeg disk, hence I don't have any backup.
Does anyone know how to recover those lost photos or any hints? Much appreciated in advance.

To show hidden files . For Win 10, just Google like I did.
Windows 7

Select the Start button, then select Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization.
Select Folder Options, then select the View tab.
Under Advanced settings, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then select OK.

Careful that you don't write anything to the card to corrupt things more. Does the card have any tab that can be set to prevent access? If so, set it.

Get the program “Recuva”. It’s free and it is the best data recovery program for deleted images that I have used, and I have tried many both free and paid.

Tenny52,
Years ago when I was doing computer consulting, I found a program called "GetDataBack" from Runtime Software. There are different versions for FAT & NTFS. The nice thing is that you can download a trial which will show you the files that can be recovered. If it shows your files, you can pay the registration cost and run the recovery on the files it found. I once recovered 93GB of usable data on a drive that said there was nothing on it. I have since used the program to recover many additional drives (as a System Admin for a major University) and never had a disappointment. If you have any questions or need any help, PM me.

Good Luck,
Carl

I don't know why this has happened, and please explain how to view those hidden folers/files

In the camera-

In the Playback menu go to Playback folder and click to the right on the multi-selector. That will show your folders.

One more thing I noticed looking at your screen shots. I have never seen the Lost.dir on anything formatted in my cameras. Is it possible you formatted this card in a computer?

Also a big fan of GetDataBack. Have the paid version after using the trial to verify data was there. Have only used it several times over the years to recover NTFS HDD's when MFT's were corrupted, but when you need it...

Also recovered data from a failing HDD AFTER cloning to another HDD, operating on clone, NOT original, as you want to minimize use of a failing HDD.

Thank you folks,
In my camera, I performed Menu: Hide image: Deselect All
Menu:Playback: D610/All/Current, it doesn't show all folders; but shows all pictures on D610/All.
Then I connected my camera to my PC using a micro-USB cord, and can see all three folders.
I copy and paste the folders from my camera to my PC and used Faststone to download them to my picture folders. Now I have all my pictures back.

If I insert the chip to my PC, I see no folders at all; because I performed Apply- hidden on the only one folder there.
I don't think I reformatted my chip on my PC, I could see my earlier pictures during my vacation.
My D610 stored the picture on a new folder after 800-1000 raws taken; and somehow hide my earlier two folders; so I thought I had lost 1700+ pictures. I hope somebody can explain why this happened.
Now, in my chip, all my pictures are there but hidden.
Much appreciate if any one can tell me how to recover or un-hide those folders/pictures.

Can you access your camera from explorer on your computer? It might show up as a 'drive'. If you can, can you access the directories (folders)? If you can access the folders, can you copy them to your computer?

Once you got that far did you select "all" and click OK ?
If you did, as soon as you are in the Playback menu you should see "D610 ALL"

Yes/no, I don't see all three folders but I can see all the pictures taken.
Now, after a little research, I know how to view those hidden files.
Insert the Chip to PC: select View(on top bar) : options : change folders and search options : view : show hidden files, folders , drives.
then all my hidden folders and files show up.

Once you have the hidden folders displayed, I always use TeraCopy for copying. It allows you to see the progress of the copy, doesn't hang if a problem, reports any errors at the end, and with verify, verifies the copy.
