My wife is just a casual photographer but a few years ago I gave her and our younger son (special needs) lessons in composition and basics - during a picture trip I over heard "Why didn't someone tell me about this stuff 40 years ago?" when she saw the difference in her photographs as compared to her snapshots. Hmm? We met a bit over 40 years before that. Who could she have been talking about?
Well last month she took Jon to the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles for a dinosaur exhibit and they also toured the big walk in butterfly, bug and exotic plants room. Low light and a lot of movement made the butterflies a problem for her Canon SX-50 (flash refused to work, took me two hours to get it working when she got home-reset everything to factory defaults and set it up over again and the flash worked). The large number of spiders were a "surprise" but along the way she did some shots of the flowers. This one came out really nice. And there are some of those spider webs.
I am including this print in Photo Club this month.
Excellent shot and how pleasing to hear that your son with special needs was involved as well.

Jerry, please tell your wife that this is a wall hanger. Excellent in every way one could apply, comp, light, etc.
If you were into photography 40 years ago you blew it. What would a 40 year period could have been. In addition you are blessed to have a wife that shares you love of photography and having been together for 40 years is a great statement in itself.

Very beautiful, Jerry and congrats to the wife. We have a blue passion flower which has blooms almost identical to that one although our leaves are very long and narrow.

Thank You
Jon is 5 in mental function. But can learn things by trial and error or repetition. He still chatters about "rule of thirds" even though his interest in cameras has pretty much faded. When he uses the camera (an old Fujifilm HS10) he plays with the controls, because he sees me using my controls so I have to stop and reset things every so often. He takes pictures of things that catch his attention and occasionally gets a nice shot that I didn't even notice.

Thank you very much, I will pass it along.
40 years ago she had zero interest in anything but snapshots, or being in photographs "That is what you are for!"
She was an OR Tech, Specialty RN, Surgical Nurse and finally OR Charge Nurse. Now she has time to learn some photography skills herself but still tends to tell me to take the pictures (often wanting me to do stills and video at the same time??????)
Great shot! Lookout, Bob, she is gaining on you.

Thanks very much, will pass it on. Since she learned about the various rules for composition she has done some really good images.
I think she is going to stay casual, but will pay attention when I do lessons for her and our special needs son so her work will improve.
She leaves her cameras (SX-50 and a Panasonic videocam) with me to take care of, clean, keep the batteries charged, download her photos and videos into LR, format the cards etc. She sometimes has pain from a nerve problem, a bad knee that goes out from time to time and now both thumbs have almost no cartilage left so she has severe weight limits and sometimes pain. She just can't get out many days. But I am trying to find her help, vitamins/minerals that may help etc plus I am preparing more lessons for them to get interest for something besides TV (ain't cable great, you can watch every episode of your old favorite shows if you time it right and have a DVR with a BIG hard drive - in her case MASH, Gunsmoke and several others)
