It may be related to the assessed taxes in NC. (I did live there for 13 years). Punctuation/enunciation/literacy and quality education costs money!!
One of my pet peeves in life is people objecting to taxation. Services cost money - there is "no free lunch".
Sorry for my ranting. I agree with your main consideration. It's appaling!! BTW: I taught mathematics for 40 years in NJ public schools.

My issue: "ax" for "ask". "I want to ax you a question."

Also, the lack of capitalization. We enter customer information into our computer and a couple of the younger employees were not capitalizing. I questioned them and their answer was that it didn't matter. I explained that it looked unprofessional and I wanted them to start capitalizing. Later, I had to show them which words to capitalize because they weren't taught how to.

I assure, they were taught what to capitalize - they weren’t paying attention!

Little things annoy me. For example, watching TV, a character will say, "My name is Lieutenant Fred McDonald." That isn't his name. His parents didn't name him Lieutenant. He should say either, "I am Lieutenant Fred McDonald" or "My name is Fred McDonald."

Another thing that annoys me is the excessive use of the word "need." "I'm going to need you to come with me." Really? When will he need that person to come with him? Watch old movies and TV shows, and you will not hear "need" used so often. We have become a very needy society.

Yes, I do find it difficult getting through each day.

Regarding need, it’s even worse. “You need to come with me.” No, YOU WANT me to come with you.

I suspect we wouldn't even be having this discussion if the President had not tweeted that he was always going to capitalize the word country when tweeting about the U.S. The problem is that he doesn't always capitalize the word. So he inadvertently has started a conversation, the ramifications of which have spread to UHH. It's a good conversation to have because texting and tweeting is destroying the English language. LOL

Wherever do you find coupons these days. Surely not in our Sunday newspaper.

This is another iconic example of Grouchy Old People. Maybe, but what I really dislike is the over use of the word Iconic.

I absolutely can relate. Sales are now called "sales events," like they're selling tickets. Rain is now sometimes called a "rain event." I could go on all day. I probably will at that.

All double negatives.

I worked for a large supermarket for 18 years, the last 10 in the office on night shift. Basically I was babysitting as most of the employees were highschool kids

Every month when Readers Digest came out I would pull one off the shelf and turn to the Word Power section, this was always near shifts end. I would proceed to read the words and then ask the kids for the definition.it was both fun and eye opening. Also did a little of this day in history, equally eye opening.

I agree Jerry. There is a lawyer ad that plays here that starts out "My name is Attorney Jim _________"
I always say the same thing. His name is not Attorney it's Jim.

My biggest pet peeve is "vet-tran". The word is pronounced "vet-er-an". There are 2 "e's" in the word folks....please use them or a veteran might sneak up behind you..... I just want to claw the blackboard when I hear a newscaster mispronounce that word.

Or "vet-ra-narian". It is pronounced "vet-e-narian" . It also has 2 "e's"

Have we become so lazy in this country?

I hate all these talking heads on TV passing themselves off as journalists. Or even pundits.
Journalists usually research, collect, (sometimes photograph) and distribute information that makes a story. (this is known as work)
Pundits are supposed to be experts of a given field. Usually, you also have to research, collect, and study, to become this expert. (this is also known as work)
Journalists, and pundits both, really know the difference.
I sincerely wonder if these talking heads can even explain all of this today.... (I question if they know how to work).
