Hi all. My wife and I are going to Hawaii in a month. Kauai, Hawaii, and Oahu. This will not be a 'beach vacation'. Our plan is to see the sites and unique places that are Hawaii. Most will be accessible by short/very short walk/hike from car. No sunrise this trip. I do not want to take all of my equipment. So, based on your experience which lenses (two max I think) do you suggest? D810, 70-200 f4 VR, 24-70 f2.8, 16-35 f4, 50 f1.8, TC 20 III. I plan to do a helicopter in Kauai. If I can, should this be the 70-200? No tripod this trip. (Taking everything is not an option.)
Your suggestions will be appreciated.
I’d take one wide-angle zoom and one long zoom. Or, perhaps, a good bridge camera that does it all to really lighten the load and let you enjoy your trip rather than messing with your equipment all the time.
I have decided that I don't need the big camera for most travel, especially if there is an airplane involved. I am going to try my Sony a6000 with an 18-135 3.5-5.6 and a 55-210 kit lens for an upcoming trip to San Diego and see if it covers my needs. I even have a small tripod for it that fits in a carry-on bag. It's not a great tripod, so that might be the weak link.

I would take three: 70-200 f4 VR, 24-70 f2.8, 16-35 f4. You are going that far and spending money to get there. What's a third lens?......
You will experience many, many huge grand helicopter views. You will only capture a small part of the with the 16-35. Even less with the other lens.
You will miss the wider views at the submarine, Battleship Missouri and probably at the Arizona.
Luau? If sitting in the back, you may want the 70-200.
The humpback whales may be there. Whale watching tour??.......
Looking forward to your images!!!

And a TC if you can. Also, take you National Parks pass if you have one. On Kauai, I often had a 70-200 and a 2x. There a re BIF opportunities galore and, of course golden hour shots. On Kauai try Smith's Luau, it is a great show. Your 24-70 2.8 would be good. ( I used my 18-35 1.8)
I live here on Oahu .. I have shot with my D800E .. D810 and now D850 .... I almost exclusively shoot with a 24-70 2.8 .. additionally you could use the 70-200 ...but for the helicopter tours .., you can only take one lens and can not have another lose in the cabin ..
As for the helicopter trips .. especially on Kauai .. be sure to check with the helicopter company ..., our Blue Hawaiian would not let take my big camera .., I had to take a Point and shoot .., very disappointing... so find a company that allows you to take your D810 ... use exclusively your 24-70 2.8 and go with Jack Harter Helicopters ...option.,, N O D O O R S ...A 16 16-35 will serve you well ..as most of your shots will be wide angle ...donât bother with the 70-200 ..!!!!
250 -1/1000 will cover the speed.. do not go too wide on the lens or you start to get the inside of the helicopter and the rotor blades ..ISO 400-1600 ..I used up to 1/3000 .. and nothing below 1l1000
..you can always request the pilot to slow down for a particular shot ...
Good luck .. don’t forget to use my baggage storage service I own at Honolulu Interntional Airport .. if you want to leave a bag or two with us .. No charge to the HOGGS .. (808) 372-5411 ..
Good luck on your trip ...

Take the doors off helicopter ride on Kauai. It is worth it. You can google it to find the companies. I think there are two. On the helicopter the 24/70 will work. I used a 24/105. Go on a Napali Coast ride and take a wide angle.
If you don't mind the size and weight, the 24-70mm and the 70-200mm f/2.8.
I like wides. So were I you, I would take the 16-35 and the 70-200, although the 24-70 may well be wide enough for "the canyon."
