Anywhere along on of the Great Lakes can’t go wrong! Copper Harbor a must and Brockway Mountain Drive from Copper Harbor to Eagle River.
If your back in summer you will want to get to Isle Royale from Copper Harbor as well

Don't miss The Mystery Spot in St. Ignace. It's been around since I was a boy if that gives you an idea. It's pretty cool.

Another spot in St. Ignace along the highway are large statues of Paul Bunyan and Blue. Right behind the statues is a climb to the top of a tall rock that will give an absolutely fantastic view of the area. The climb is not difficult....you don't have to go straight up the rock.

Tips for places to see in the U.P.

This link gives even more spots to visit

My thanks to all who have offered suggestions. Since my daughter has only been there a couple months and they are still getting settled, they haven't had much chance to do a lot of exploration. I did look at many of the online "suggestions" but getting input from you all that have actually been there is very valuable to me. Yes, we expect to make several trips a year to visit. And yes, I really want to visit Isle Royale in the better weather. I've always been intrigued with Isle Royale since I read a youth novel about ham radio (Isle Royale Calling) written by Helen Cloutier back in 1957. I still have that book and even though a youth oriented novel, I still enjoy reading it occasionally. This book also got me involved in a 50 year hobby as a ham radio operator, longer than I have been dabbling in photography. With my daughter and her family in the UP, I will now have the chance to visit the place I've thought about for 50 years.

Have a great trip to our Upper Peninsula. Before crossing the the 5 mile long Mackinaw Bridge get off I-75 at either of the last 2 exits. There is a great photo opp of the bridge just east of it next to the Riviera Motel. Perhaps you can get a shot of a freighter going under.. Also Mackinaw lighthouse. Depending on the time of day if you proceed west out of town on W, Central Ave. (light in town) go about 2 miles to a T intersection. Turn Right toward the water and the and the McGulpin Light house and another great view of the bridge looking from the west. Also in Mackinaw the retired Coast Guard Ice Breaker Mackinaw. Self guided tours are available but not sure at that time of year. The Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie is a great visit and close up view of the great Lake freighters. 2 west out of St. Ignace has lots of great viewing spots. Whitefish point has a Museum and info on the Edmund Fitzgerald that went down in a November gale many years ago. You will be near Tahquamenon Falls, upper and lower. I do also prefer the lower falls better but if snow on the ground and ice the upper is spectacular. Seney Wildlife Refuge is then near. They have a few mile drive, thru the park. Not sure if it is open or what birds would ne there in November. From Seney you could take 77 north to a quaint little town of Grand Marais then a nice drive along the water to Pictured Rocks. I believe that the boat tours of the rocks are closed at that time of year but views are available from the shore. Be sure to have warm clothes. From your base camp in Iron River, Marquette is a must see. Lake freighters get loaded there with iron ore. In Baraga near the state Park along 41 there is a rambling river with foot paths that is quite picturesque. Porcupine mountains and Lake of the Clouds, Bond Falls the city of Ontonagon are great. 15 years ago I spent 3 weeks in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Houghton- Hancock, are very old cities showing the homes of the lumber and mining industry of a bygone era. also a very nice bridge going from Houghton to Hancock. The Quincy mine had tours but if not, a stop and photo opp is required. The city of Calumet has an old Opera house and the Laurium Manor Inn is now a B & D in 1908 it was the private home of a mine owner. Many beautiful homes and home of the typical mine workers still exist. Follow Brockway Mountain Drive up to Copper Harbor and Fort Wilkins. on the return trip take 26 along the water. There are many lighthouses thru out the U.P however the best IMHO is the Sand Hill Lighthouse south of Eagle Nest Enjoy your trip. It is privately owned and tours avail but call ahead for tour days and hours. Again enjoy your trip and your kids.

You've received a lot of very good suggestions and I hope you're able to visit many of those locations. I'll give you two that have nothing whatever to do with photography. In Iron River you MUST have pizza at the Riverside. And if it's open, stop at Clyde's Drive-in on US 2 in St. Ignace for a burger. Both are UP institutions and well worth experiencing.

On the way to Iron River I think one of your best photo locations would be Bond Falls. Much more than a single waterfall, but multiple falls. Hundreds of different angles and compositions. Virtually no walking to get there. Very accessible paths and enjoyable walking within the area. Easily a half days worth of shooting. OK, you missed the fall color but lots of great monochrome possibilities. Pictured is just one of the waterfalls at Bond.

My daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter moved to the UP (Iron River) a few months ago and my wife and I will be making our first visit next month just prior to Thanksgiving. I've been looking at online suggestions for UP photo opportunities but would like to see if any people here have suggestions for memorable photo sites. We'll be there several weeks, coming up via the Mackinac Bridge and returning home via Sault Ste Marie thru Canada.

No one mentioned the lovely Macanac Island featured in the movie “ Somewhere in Time “. There are no cars at all, only horses. Luncheon at the magnificent Grand Hotel is a lifetime event.

Kitchi-iti-kipi (Big Springs) near Manistique off Hwy 2 - a hidden gem we discovered last trip to the UP. A large springs with a boat you self-propel via a cable across the springs. http://www.exploringthenorth.com/bigspring/spring.html. It makes a nice stop on the way back from Iron River.
