The Woodpecker with My New Lens

I really missed having two long lenses (one for each camera body) so since it was my birthday and I have been saving for a possible 7DIII when it comes out I ordered the Tamron 150-600 G2 (I had a G1 but traded it after I got my 100-400L mkII)
Got it this afternoon, one day late but that is OK. Unpacked and inspected etc and tried a few shots of the woodpecker - it only landed where it was extreme back lighting from the hazy afternoon sun, then flew off when two hawks went over followed by a bunch of crows that were ganging up on them.
So the shots came out with a lot of noise and not great sharpness after I brought details out of the shadows. The sky was very hazy and came out a washed out light grey. I will try for some front light shots in the morning. I will also try it on my 5DIV. The G1 and my 6D loved each other, got slightly better shots than with my 7DII but without so much reach. If this one does better with a FF I know which bodies will be teamed with which lens when I am using both.

80D, Tamron 150-600 G2 @ 600, 1/320 @ f/7.1 ISO 800 & 500 for the two shots Hand held at about 60 feet - my hands weren't real steady this afternoon and the poor light kept my SS down. These are frames 1 & 4 with the new lens.

Beautiful shots of a beautiful bird, Jerry! Are you finding your G2 to focus faster than the G1? I'm having focusing issues with my G1 and have already sent it to Tamron once for service, but I'm still having the same problems...

I honestly can't remember how fast the G1 was. Mine was very early production and had known problems with some cameras - my 7DII I had then being one of them. Both Tamron and Canon came out with firmware fixes plus I sent mine in to Tamron (this was before the Tap console) and they did two firmware updates and tuned it for the 7DII. It was not as fast the 100-400L but it did OK. The G2 is pretty fast when the two focus points are fairly close, but when far apart it does what most long lenses do, it hunts often going in the wrong direction first and then gets the focus.
I need to wait for a day with good light. We have been having high humidity, dust from the deserts and weak watery sunlight due to high haze and some thin dispersed clouds, even my 100-400L mk II is having some trouble with this light.

I am going to try it with my 5DIV to see if that combo is better - the FF 6D and the G1 worked better with each other than than the G1 and 7DII. In fact the G1 worked well with the 6D right out of the box except at long distance. After the firmware fix that was cleared up.

Thanks so much, Jerry. You answered my question. I've been expecting mine to focus as quickly as the Canon 100-400, and most of the time I'm shooting in strong sunlight over water, which causes a glare with low contrast.

Thanks, I am getting my tripod and gimbal head out. Still cloudy and mixed light, possibility of rain (Yippee, we need it.) for the next several days. Plus I have to go to the dentist ( nice lady and a family friend, but a dentist) for a filling replacement. A small one over 20 years old came out.

But this is So Cal so the clear sky and sun will come back, if only the winds don't bring the dust etc down from the high desert.
