Cannot view photos on SD card in camera

I have a SONY RX10 M4 camera and am using a 256GB SanDisc Extreme Pro 95/MBs SD card. I recently returned from a trip to Europe and downloaded the photos I had taken to my computer for editing (using Picasa). I did not edit the photos on the SD card, only the images downloaded to Picasa. I did rearrange the photos on the card, putting them into folders and naming the folders.

Now, for some reason, I cannot view any photos on the camera. Not just the ones from Europe, but all of the photos on the card (1000's). When i take a new shot, I can view that photo, but no others. When I put the card into a reader, I can view all the photos on the computer. I tried moving the photos from the card to a file on the computer, re-formatting the card, and re-entering the photos on the card. No luck.

Any ideas? Many thanks! --- Greg

If you did the rearranging on your computer, the camera can not recognize the folders you renamed.
The camera can only recognize folders that it names on the card.

Yeah, Don't use your computer to alter the directory on the card. I always use windows explorer to transfer files from SD card to the computer. After you are sure that all are secure on your HD you can use the camera to reformat and then DON'T CHANGE THE File Structure on the card.

Correct and ONLY use your camera to delete the images not your computer.

Ditto. Just be thankful that you got them off and start with a new card going forward.

I have a SONY RX10 M4 camera and am using a 256GB ... (show quote)

Your big mistake was changing the card's folder structure in your computer. You camera can't read that structure. Copy all the images off your card (you shouldn't be using it for long term storage anyway), and reformat the card in your camera using low level format if available, not on your computer. The only thing you should be doing to your SD card on your computer is downloading files from it.

Interesting.
I've been deleting images on cards via the computer for over ten years, I never had a problem.
(However, I NEVER alter the files or directory structure on the card.)

Deleting files on your SD cards from a PC is not an issue. Formatting may be an issue, as will altering the folder structure.

When you import to Picassa it asks if you want to delete the files on the card.

You might have clicked "YES"

Depending on the camera, file structure can be altered on computer, but must be done in accordance with instructions in the manual.

From Canon manual:

Not familiar with your specific camera. On Nikons, in the playback menu, you get to choose the folder you want to view. One selection is "All". Otherwise the camera looks at the default folder. Sony may have something similar.

Correct.
I ALWAYS format a new chip in the camera, NEVER in the PC. The camera OS may want stuff on the chip that the PS will not be aware is required.

True!
I have added a file called "OwnerInfo.PDF" to the root directory of all my memory chips. The camera just ignores it, but it is available if someone finds the chip and wants to return it to me.

I frequently delete photos from my SD card using my PC, just those few that are obvious blows, accidental double shots, or lacking interest. I then follow up with copying the remainder to an external drive and to my PC. After that, I format the SD card in the camera using the camer's format option. I've neVer had a problem using this routine.
