An office with a view...

These large herds of goats work behind temporary, moveable fences to clear the undergrowth in a effort to reduce the fire danger in the hills above the San Francisco Bay. Their office has a great view of Oakland below and San Francisco across the bay. They are attended by two and four legged herders and I am always happy to see them!

Will that effect soil erosion?

Phil, I was going to say what a fantastic idea this is, and then I read Eddy's question above I'm think SF Bay Area doesn't have the landslide issues of SoCal, but memories are fuzzy. Interested in hearing whatever you know about the practice. And in the meantime, a fascinating series of photos and yes, a multi-million dollar view!

Thanks for the visit Eddy. The herds are carefully managed and moved to avoid the kind of overgrazing that could contribute to erosion. The second photo does show erosion patterns typical of drainage from the road cut. The consequences from post wild fire rains and mudslides are a far greater threat. Keeping these houses firmly in place is a serious business.

Hi Linda! It is a fantastic idea, cost-effective, sustainable and by the most basic defination eco friendly, even considering the average goat's emmission rate. Thanks for the visit my friend. The juxtaposition of these workers and the view was the motivator of this post. Goats like high places, I want to believe they are happy in thier work!

That is a super view for these diligent workers, Phil! They seemed to be intent on their work but I hope they stop to admire now and then. Goats are sure footed and can navigate the steep inclines and they are not overly picky about their diet making them well suited for the job at hand!

They eat poison oak!....bless their hearts. None of these photos do justice to the size of these herds, there are several and each numbers more than 100 goats. Thanks for the visit Carol.

Thanks for the kind comment Donna. This road can produce some stunning views with the right light and atmospheric conditions, I should do more with it.
