Hi. I lost the battery & charger for my Nikon d3000 camera. I have a reputable dealer in my area. To replace the battery & charger with OEM Nikon products would cost about $100. Walmart sells replacement batteries from a company called Upstart Batteries. They offer two exact replacement batteries with a charger for $22.99.

Has anyone had any experience with this company. Or should I bite the bullet, and go Nikon OEM?

Any responses will be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Irv.

Ok. But go for OEM or Upstart?

Hundred bucks aint much for what makes your camera tick, I would stick with the OEM (I always do). That 22 bucks just sounds way too cheap to me, I wouldn't trust it!

I have never found cheap batteries very good--they always seem to have a short lifespan. I would especially not trust cheap LiIon batteries since they have a propensity to spontaneously combust.

Never heard of Upstart batteries, so they’d be out of the running. Plus, $23 is way too cheap for anything that I’m going to rely on unless I need something to get me through a few days away from home.

I have Canon equipment, not Nikon but I tried batteries other than Canon and they seemed to work, but not as long as the Canon ones. Also when registering the batteries with my camera (3 of them) they all registered with the same serial number. Made it impossible to track. Go with OEM.

Since you can get the camera, battery, and charger used from KEH for $115, I would buy the Wal-Mart stuff and add the Wal-Mart 3 year protection plan for $3.00.

Check out eBay. Loads of options like this one with two batteries and a double charger for $17.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000mAh-EN-EL9-EN-EL9A-Battery-LCD-Charger-For-Nikon-D5000-D3000-D60-D40-D40x/323004806884?hash=item4b349636e4%3Am%3AmY_j9xdixA5HqlICQmgyavQ&var=512141144472

I have bought loads of generic batteries over the years for different cameras and never had a problem. If you are worried about them not lasting just buy extra.

$23 is not enough to build and sell (at a profit) 2 quality batteries and a quality charger, especially if it’s a Li-ion battery.

I have used second hand batteries for many things and I'm currently using them in my camera. I research and read the reviews I find. In those reviews you will always find somebody giving them a bad review. What is the percentage of the bad reviews? A high percent? Yeah, avoid them. How does the company respond? Bad? Yeah, avoid them. Otherwise I'd say go for after market brand. I don't know that company so I can't say about them. I've also had many OEM things end up crap and finally had to go to an off brand to get a good product. Basically do a good research through many sources to make your decision.
