I have a three day trip planned for October to the Black Mountain, NC area. I would appreciate suggestions on great photo options such as water falls, etc. I will be staying in the Pisgah National Forest. This was a last minute opportunity and now trying to plan photo opportunities.

Thanks

Goodness. Where to start? This link to Our State (Internet site of the magazine and public TV show of the same name) is as good as any.

I was just in Black Mountain for lunch, last Friday. Downtown is full of homey restaurants and shops.

The area within an hour’s drive is full of waterfalls, wineries, scenic views, trails, and more.

I grew up in Greenville, SC. The Asheville area (20 minutes from Black Mountain) is 45 minutes from my old neighborhood, so winding mountain roads were the driving training grounds I explored.

I love the area. My son is in the Honors College of Stage and Screen at Western Carolina University, so we visit him and the area a few times a year.

The area (roughly) from Black Mountain to Sylva, and from Greenville to Boone, includes lots of theatre, music, wine, food, fishing and boating, pottery and art, ski slopes, state and national parks, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, Hendersonville, Table Rock, Flat Rock Playhouse, Caesar’s Head, Grandfather Mountain, Highlands, Cashiers, Brevard, Lake Lure, Maggie Valley... You could drive around for months and never see it all.

I live in that area. Linville Falls, Hawksbill and Table Rock have spectacular views, Crabtree Falls on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Whitewater Falls, several falls along the Horsepasture River:

While in Black Mtn stop by Tysons Furniture Store. You won't be sorry if you'd like to see cabinetry, furniture workmanship that you thought was lost to modernization.
Montreat
I-40 East, get off at the Old Fort exit.
Drive thru Old Fort on US 70, a few miles east of town Curtis Creek Rd on the left. Not sure if its ever been paved but it's a nice gravel road. Winds through forest beside creek all the way up to the Blue Ridge Pkwy. One of my favorite drives. Deer, flowers, ferns, mushrooms, fungi and cool.
I think State Rd. 9 from Black Mtn to Bat Cave/ Lake Lure/Chimney Rock is still closed due to rock slides.
Local Breweries in the area.

I live 2 hours from Pisgah. Went hiking there a couple weeks ago. Want to go back when the leaves change. I am sure you will find plenty to see and do. Enjoy!

All the above plus Biltmore. If you go before October 7 they are having the Chihuly Exhibit there. Go there even if it’s after the 7th.

We have a farm an hour west of where you will be, but visit that area often. Plenty of things to do outdoors. Mountains are beautiful and you won’t run out of this to do and see.

The Blue Ridge parkway is a fantastic drive, lots of winding roads, beautiful scenery and Ashville is another fantastic place. We normally go to different locations every October in NC just to drive and see the scenery. We also do a lot of mapping out all the waterfalls in the area's we will be visiting on the computer, it's one of our favorite things to do. There are Elk, Turkey, we even saw a wild goat roaming around last year, (still haven't seen any bear though ) We love NC. I know you will have a fantastic time and be sure to share your photos with us! I have another 3 weeks and then we hit the road to head that way.

If you want to test your videography skill you could go farther west and have your driver-you'll need one-fucus on driving the 'Tail of the Dragon' while you create your video. I'd strongly advise he/she not try towing a trailer through 318 curves over 11 miles of road! Take advantage of the turnouts. (You need not go fast--I "streaked" around many curves at 19 mi/hr or less.) We stayed at the Topco lodge--nice cabin, and relaxation along the river.

Have fun on your trip.
