I believe its a coopers hawk, fairly common here in AZ. One interesting item, the chicks get too big for the nest, before they can fly well. So, in the spring one will find them hanging around on the ground, with the parents watching closely.

I agree. Just looked it up in one of my bird books. The white terminal tail band helps to differentiate it from the sharp-shinned hawk. Nice shots.

Thank you wwright! Our son had juvenile Red Tailed hawk land in his yard with his two dogs, he was so worried for it....silly thing had no sense of fear of the dogs or of our son. He ended up hopping out and after a couple of day's figured out the flying thing.

If I were a betting person, I would put my money on a Red-shouldered Hawk, which I have photographed many times. Anyone else?

That I believe is a Red Shouldered Hawk. Look at the un-banded chest. The Coopers Hawk is banded or streaked in the case of juveniles all the way up to the throat, which is pale-off white. This bird is of a heavier build than you will find in the Coopers, the Coopers also has a blue-grey crown which the Hawk in the picture does not have.
