Please, a bit of advice. I love shooting shore birds, both still and in flight. Many are snowy white. I shoot with a D7200 and a Nikon 200- 500 lens, that I love. But regardless of lens, I still have trouble capturing wing and feather texture without a white wash out. I try to keep the light behind me as much ss possible. I can do a good bit with PP, but more advice, sources, appreciated. Thanks in advance great UHHers.

Shoot in raw, us a good editing program like LR Classic CC and you can recover your whites to reveal detail. If you shoot jpg, this isn't going to be as easy or impossible. Matrix metering is best to meter the whole scene.

Use spot metering and meter off the white bird. Then if the dark areas get too dark, you can perhaps bring them up a bit in PP.

Good point. I've been hooked on jpeg and need to get over it. I do have LR and PS cc, but I'm still at a basc learning level. Thanks!

White subject against darker background means to underexpose by 2/3 to 1 1/3 stops. Photography 101

A couple of things that might help. In my opinion Nikon shoots a little on the hot side so I almost Always expose at -7 using exposer compensation if shooting in aperture or shutter speed priority, if in manual adjust accordingly. I also Always use Spot Metering when shooting wildlife, especially white birds as I want the subject to be exposed properly. Also if your shooting Birds In Flight and using back button focus with the D7200, you need to Disable Exposure Lock when pressing the Shutter release button. For example: I press the back button witch enables Continuous focusing mode and as I follow the subject thru the view finder I will always have the shutter release half pressed ready to press fully when I want to take a series of shots. With the Exposure Locked On, your camera will Stop Metering and keep the same exposure, Even if the bird flies into brighter or darker areas of the scene.. This of coarse will result in either an over or under exposed capture. Hope this helps..
