I know when using the tripod the VR is off. What setting do you use on a monopod? I still have some shake with a monopod especially if I'm using my 200-500mm.
Thanks,
Connie
When on a monopod you can have VR on
Yup, simple as that.

With most modern lenses VR can be left on, even on a tripod. The camera will disable it automatically if necessary. Check the manual/pamphlet that came with your lens.

And we have a winner :) This is the best way - check your manual. It depends on the lens - and most modern lenses are just fine with VR + Tripod.

When I use a monopod, I do leave VR on.

Yes, the last thing we need is twenty more pages of people agreeing with you and the first responder. Just for the record, I will add my "On" to the topic.
My suggestion: Shoot with the VR on then shoot with the VR off. Which gives the best results? Now, after doing that, let us know!

IMHO, VR is great, but it does slow down focus. If I'm at 1/focal length or above, I turn VR off. I'm a sports shooter and that's what works best for me. Best of luck..

I checked this out today. Canon 60D + 70 - 300 F4 'L' series zoom on a Velbon Ultrastick I picked up 2nd hand. You can see an improvement in the viewfinder with stabilisation ON.
Thanks everyone, I was shooting on a monopod with my Nikkor 200-500mm. It's pretty heavy so I was still having some camera movement. I do believe I had the VR on but some of my pictures still have blurred faces with the rest of the player in focus. This was my first time using my 200-500. I have a tripod with a fluid head. I think I will be using that from now on with this lens.

So how does the camera know it is on a tripod. Does the screw in my L bracket trip the tripod sensor?
