I had never seen these but have heard of them. These are plaques, I'm sure were sponsored, put in sidewalks where Jews were taken from their homes in World War II and sent off to concentration camps. Just have to look closely when you're walking around. I found these while shopping with the wife in Kaiserslautern, Germany today. Just a grim reminder of man's inhumanity to man, one family wiped out strictly because of their religion...nuggets of history throughout the world...too bad we're erasing ours....taken with my second rate cell phone camera.
A million thoughts are now running though my head ... because of this potent capture ... thanks for posting ... Germany has tried to make sure it will never forget what it did to its own citizens.
A side note ... it isn't the equipment but the eye behind the equipment that makes the photo ... give thanks for that cell phone being handy ...

WOW !!! every time i see a reminder like this, i remember my feelings after seeing Schindler's List for the first time... in the theater , no one, not even one, moved for about 10 minutes after the credits were done. it was a very quite walk to the car and a long drive home.
I do not speak or understand German but am I correct that the top two plaques were killed at Auswitz but the bottom three were able to escape to Sweden and Palestine before the war? Jews tell us to never forget and it is obvious why. This can happen again.
Thank you for a very moving photo.
Dennis
I don't recall seeing anything like this, but then I probably wasn't looking, either. This is so cool. How wonderful that people want to remember and to be reminded. It seems that here we do everything we can to forget. Thus we are doomed to repeat the atrocities.
Sad, but the reminder is important.
When the person in charge is outrageous, his followers will too become outrageous.

These are interesting, and I did not know that these plaques existed. I had a similar experience here in Tulsa though. One day while walking I came across some sidewalk plaques. Examining them I found them to be the names of businesses or persons whose place at the that spot had been burned during the 1921 Tulsa race riot, My experience was very moving as I am sure that yours was. Reminders can be stark and sobering. Thanks for sharing.
How would you like to be the "owner" of one of those houses?

As for owning one of those homes, most aren't there anymore, at least in Kaiserslautern, its all businesses now since it was almost totally destroyed in the war.
Thanks everyone for your comments, its definitely eye opening and a stern reminder of world history. You can paint over it, remove statues, try and deny it, but it can never be changed or erased. I'm presuming the 'countries' like Sweden, Palestine at the bottom of the plaques are where those individuals escaped.....not sure though.
