I like to shop at Costco where the parking stalls are wide and I do not have to worry. The only thing on my mind when I park are my doors going to get dinged. My dealer even offers door ding insurance, Sad.
Parking solution: Going to a place to shop and do not like the options so I park on the back forty. Where no one in their right mind would park. All by myself and think I have found the solution. A little extra walk but figure it is worth it. Come back and find I am surrounded by other cars. The rest of the lot is empty but my car must be a car magnet. Go figure.
Just because some paints a line we have to comply. The lines should be to help but not to dictate.

I have a van with a wheelchair lift for the wife. It is hard enough finding a handicap parking space let alone one that is van accessible, they are usually taken by some small sedan or pick-up truck.
I went to the local Costco in Southern California a few years ago. No handicap spots available so I too parked in the back forty where no one else was parking. Tons of empty spaces available. I couldn't believe it when some woman decided to park out there also, but out of a hundred or so empty spots, where does she park her car? That's right, in the space next to my van so I couldn't deploy the lift. She did move after I explained the situation.

paulrph1, If you park like this for whatever reason you are just as guilty. Come on man, have some respect and set the example you think others should follow.

I remember back in 1971 my wife went grocery shopping in our two or three day old 1972 Toyota that we got when I got out of the service. She parked in the back 40 between the lines thinking she would avoid any door dings. While getting groceries an announcement came over the loudspeaker asking that the owner of a yellow Toyota station wagon come to the service counter. When she arrived she was told her car had been struck and badly damaged by another car that was speeding through the parking lot. The teenager who was speeding claimed his accelerator stuck (OK, why was it stuck to the floorboards). Kid took AMC to court claiming it was manufactures fault and his insurance should not have to pay for the damages! The judge somewhat held back a laugh and as good as told the kid to get out of the courtroom, threw out the case charging the kid court costs. We haven't parked in the back 40 since (door dings are cheaper to fix than speeding car damage!).

[quote=dennis2146]Sorry but when you park to take up two spaces you can probably be assured others might have wanted one of the spaces you took. Your accusation of others who might ding your door is somewhat lame when I can probably say with accuracy that at least once in your life your car door has hit another vehicle. You being inconsiderate of others does not justify your assumption that someone MIGHT be inconsiderate to you.

I am fine with you denigrating the USMC because you probably haven’t the fortitude to have done it yourself. But remember the USMC is not anything close to armies. We are a highly trained military organization who does things you can only dream about when you think of freedom.

I did not denigrate the USMC only your comparison. BTW when you are engage do you make sure that the Sargent is there telling you when, where, how too, and what to shoot at. Marching in line is fine, did it myself for many years but all things do not relate.
So tell me again how I am infringing on someone else by me taking up two space on the back forty where no one wants to park. So ding insurance is a fabrication. At several hundred dollars for a door ding it only takes once. And my clunker, as you say, it would be much more if I have an expensive car. I can just imagine how much it would be if I had a Rolls.
You yourself should be pushing for a little extra room to prevent door dings. It is an easy solution and it doesn't cost anything. Just remember the next time you get a ding, your stance. That is all I ask is a little extra room. Costco does it and nobody complains. But since you are so insistent be sure and write the CEO of Costco with your complaint.

Looks to me like the driver has a new car and parks this way to avoid the dings. (which was mentioned above.) Now in MY case, it's because they're making the new cars 'rounder' and the driver can't see where the lines are until s/he opens the door. I guess that's the price we have to pay to save us from the idiots who run red lights and t-bone the car in the right-of-way.

The lines are placed there in order to maximize the number of spaces in the lot. I've layed out parking lots several times and used pre-drawn plans.

See that says it all. You use pre-drawn plans.
You should use the pre-drawn plans from Costco.
All those people are do is asking for a little more room that's it.

Being a disabled person, I am appalled at the sheer number of people who have parked in the handicapped areas without having a handicapped placard. All for their convenience.

What gets me are the people who have a placard displayed but the only handicap they have is mental.

True story: It was a warm Sunday morning and the plan was to get on our motorcycles, go for a nice but relatively short ride, then head to the local pancake palace for breakfast. There were two empty parking spots available in the whole lot, a blue zone and a regular spot just outside the restaurant entrance. Since they were adjacent spots, two bikes took the regular spot any I took the blue spot.
About half an hour later while we were enjoying our pancakes and bacon and other delightful breakfast dishes, the manager came to our table and said another patron had complained there was a motorcycle parked in the handicap spot just outside the front door, and that they had called the police. My response to the manager was, that's nice, tell them to mind their own business and as for the police, maybe you should offer them some free donuts for wasting their time. Oh, while you're at it, tell the complainer they really need to get a eye examination, they may need glasses. We then proceeded to finish our meal. When we left there was a police car sitting in the parking lot. The officer had arrived only a few minutes before we came out. Turns out he also rides a Goldwing and was more interested in talking bikes than patrolling the streets of a quiet small town on a Sunday morning. As for being parked in the handicap parking spot, the police officer didn't say anything about that since there was a handicap license plate on my motorcycle.

I normally only use the handicap parking spot when no other spots are available because, I really can walk a good distance before I need to take a break. This is because I was in a pretty bad car crash a few years ago and I have a good bit of titanium in me where the bones were shattered so bad they couldn't be fixed properly. It was what one would call a life changing experience. Anyway, numerous surgeries later and more hospital food than any relatively healthy person should have to endure, and a good amount of time, I can walk fairly well. When we go places that do require a lot of walking we bring along the walker chair and if I get tired I can sit and be pushed, otherwise I walk.

They should have you towed.

Why? My vehicle is in the blue zone and it has a handicap license plate. Unlike in this photo, most blue spots directly adjacent a regular spot have a no parking spot buffer for things like wheelchair lifts and what ever. At least here in South East Pennsylvania they do. Anyway, that being the case, the car in the photo is parked half in a regular spot and half in a blue zone. Since my truck is parked wholey in the blue zone and it does have a valid handicap license plate, why do you feel I should be towed?! Do you have a problem with people with physical disabilities?! Keep in mind, I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS.

You aren’t really serious are you? When I see comments like yours I am always reminded by my USMC drill instructor who said to us, “Look, everyone is out of step but Smith”. Lines are there so that everyone has a place to park. By the way, your vehicle, at only $36,000 must be a clunker
I will forget your personal attacks. Now let me explain myself. Even though I do, I never park near a handicapped space and I always do it on the back forty. You being in the USMC are trained to not think outside the box but all things do not apply to all people, at least not in all cases. I see many of the lots with spots are not taken with many unoccupied spots at least where I live. And those are the ones that I take. I do not do this all of the time either but just sometimes. Sometimes I hold my breath and park comes back just hoping not to find a ding in my door. Door ding insurance? That costs me money, time. Dings costs me money, time. But that is not relevant.
Actually my $36000 car is brand new a Honda Accord sport, best car I have ever owned and I want to keep it that way. You should drive one and you would be amazed. 38 computers, price is not always a guide to quality. But I am sure you have the best of everything. Nice try on your dig though.
The doors on my car open wide, I mean real wide and I should not have to squeeze through a sliver to get out of my car. Most older people are buying Crossovers because they are easy to get in and out of. But they are missing so much more and I choose the other options.
Your comparison is lame and applies only to the armies. I know the purpose of the lines but give me six inches of more space and there will be no problems. Costco has no problems with their parking.

Why on Earth does it have 38 computers? Couldn't they figure out how to do it with less. Reminds me of photos I've seen of desks of leaders in some other countries. The more phones on the desk, the more important they are. My desk only had one phone but it had 20 different lines, all activated by a button.
My car is a $32,000 Chevy, the top of the line of its model. It has stuff that I've yet to use. It even has a 110 volt outlet in it. It has a Bose sound system in it and heated leather seats and steering wheel and heated mirrors and all kinds of sensors and warning devices and safety features and comfort features. And according to the guy at the dealership who's job is to sell additional warranty's, it only has two computers, two. There are lots of sub-processors but only TWO computers. One is the ECM and the other is the main computer that runs everything else in the car. He explained that although these units don't fail too often, they do fail and are rather expensive. The cost of the additional insurance wasn't much so we bought it. Should either unit fail while we own that car, they will be replaced at no out of pocket cost. Did you buy insurance on your 38 computers?

Normally I do not engage in these conversations as everyone has set their mind and won't be persuaded to change, plus there is all the name calling etc., however, I downloaded the picture and greatly enlarged it. I'm not at all positive, but this car may have disabled (or the French equivalent) license plates. If you compare the plate in question with the car plate in the 1st row you will see considerable writing on plate #1 comparted to plate #2. Could it be??

I Apologize to you and I do not believe that this person is not parking correctly and they are at fault. But I also believe they may be frustrated with what I consider poor parking facilities. I think this person could have made better choices. Now some store and many newer ones seem to have the consumer in mind when they make decisions. What I do not like about Costco is that they have gone the other way on handicapped parking. They just closed down a bunch of regular parking making a mess. But what they have done, as I see it, they had little other choices.
I could have had a handicapped license myself but chose not to because I figured there were people that were worse off than I was and needed it more than I do.
But I also see people that are riding carts in stores that should be walking. Now I know I will be attacked on this one because they will claim that you cannot tell by looking at some one. But there are people that do abuse the systems. My doctor when I see him one of the questions he always asks if I am walking every day. Yes I am. How fast are you walking. More than just a stroll I hope.
Some of the parking spots are too narrow one cannot get the doors open while much of the lot remains unoccupied. That is low mentality and reflects only what the people in the business thinks will increase their sales. But if you add 6 inches to a space and you park 10 spaces away you are only adding 60 inches in distance. That is only two to three steps further and I personally would rather walk the two steps in order to prevent $100 of dollar in car damage. From my visits to most stores most of the handicapped spaces remain unoccupied. And that is a small price to pay to help other out.
But what I think should happen is for those who can walk give them adequate parking let them walk the two more steps and save them car damage.
