I will be traveling for a few photography trips coming up. I have a great carbon fiber tripod but it is bigger than the standard travel tripods.
I am looking for some recommendations. I do have a tripod head that I like and can use with a travel tripod.

Any suggestions?

They are not made anymore but maybe can be found used but my travel tripod is the CF 3 Legged Thing Eddie Evo 2. Fits the bill for me...Here are the specs from B & H's website, even though it is no longer available... I also won a Sirui travel tripod but wound up selling it as the specs were not up to the 3LT specs.

Roni - You might take a look at travel tripods by MeFoto and Sirui.
Also look at the “Reporter” Sirui tripod line.
I found both to be very sturdy and hold up well in the field. /Ralph

Roni, the only tripod I take on holidays is my heavy-duty Gorillapod. I bought it some years ago, at that time it was just over CA$100. Granted, it does not have the long legs of a "regular" tripod, but I almost always could find something to set the tripod on. The camera I was using at that time was the Olympus E-5, a heavy beast by itself, and even with the heaviest lens I had, it was not problem with that Gorillapod.
I just checked their website, it looks that over those years, a number of new models have been added.

What are your size restrictions. Are you doing carry-on or checked baggage? What will you be using to carry equipment when out photographing on your trip? Does the bag or pack or whatever have straps or a pocket for a tripod?

PS there is also a CF version if its money no object and you want to save a few ounces (but lose a few pounds?)

Not sure how all your questions would help but here goes.

I will be carrying a backpack on board, and checking one bag. I will be using a backpack when out shooting.

I would prefer to carry the tripod separately, not on my backpack. That is what I do with my tripod now. I have a strap on it for easy carrying. It is a carbon fiber tripod, but it is a bit bulky. I have put it in checked baggage on previous trips.

So, you plan to hand carry the tripod while in the field? So you probably want a carbon fiber tripod that folds over the head you currently have possibly with a carry case. What head do you have?

There are a number of factors/questions that really should be considered including the minimum and maximum heights you like to work with, whether you have wrist or hand problems (arthritis) that would favor flip locks over twist, how much weight you care to carry and how much do you want to spend. Considering that you are in Long Island, I can't think of a better suggestion than taking a trip out to B&H or Adorama. I've always found them extremely helpful and while UHHers have great experience and info, I find playing with the gear in the store to be the most helpful.

Take your head with you to make sure it fits when the tripod is folded in.

Roni, I have the same dilemma you had and I bought a Carbon Fiber Sirui tripod for travel. I do not know your load weight on it but this one will support over 30 lbs. Siruiis a quality tripod. Possibly you can use a different model depending upon your planned load.
