I don't blame you and I hope that Canon gets this message.

Sorry it happened. When I phoned Canon a year or two ago with a question about the sensor on my 5D, they told me it was no longer supported and they no longer had any 5D parts in stock for repairs. The good news is it continues to function. Perhaps third party repair shops or maybe even established camera stores that offer repairs can help you. I believe when the cost of any repair equals or exceeds the value of the camera, it is time to replace it. I also think buying refurbished is as good or better than new. I just checked Canon's site for refurbished products and all of the cameras I looked at carried a one year warranty, not six months as posted. Maybe that will help a little.

Personally is a hard thing to change. But I work on it, most days. Then there are days like today.

Great post, thank you.

Years ago I dropped an F-1, dented the top plate so that after opening the back the latch would not reengage to keep the back closed. Set it to Canon and they said it was unrepairable; probably out of the part for the now discontinued model. Kept it closed with gaffer's tape until I could take it to an independent repair shop that scavenged the part off of one of their more extensively damaged parts cameras. Used it for many years after that. (Would still be using it if Kodak still made Kodachrome.)

While this is -- in principle -- true, the economics is what matters. If it costs an arm and a leg to repair an item that, at best, is worth a finger nail, the repair is just not worth it -- unless the item has immense sentimental value.

That is a very valid point, but there are collectors / enthusiasts that wish to undertake such restoration, whether it be cars or cameras, or other things. The cost of a technician's time will be what it is, but the lack of parts can be a show stopper. However, there are plenty of items sold for parts, which can address some of those issues. I wouldn't expect Canon to repair my T90, but I now have two working ones and one non functional one for parts. However, despite being over 30 years old two of them work just fine. I also have a repair manual, so if inclined I expect I could get someone to fix a T90. As you say however, it would not be a very viable economic proposition.

Technology and products age, just as people do. If taken care of, they can last a long time. I have no plans to trade in my wife nor my 90 year old mother-in-law for younger models! Getting them repaired is a more complex situation.

Here is my experience with Canon. A few years ago I bought a Canon A590 P&S camera that was in good condition at a Goodwill Store.
After getting it home and putting in some AA batteries and a SD card, I found that after turning it on The LCD screen was a jumble of colors and could not not see any image on it.
After doing some investigating on the web I found out that Canon had some bad sensors in these cameras and would replace them NC.
I got the info on how to send it in to Canon for the fix. They did not ask for proof of purchase or when I bought the camera,
So I sent it in, got it back and it worked fine. I used it for a little while and then gave it to my daughter.
I don't think customer service can get any better than that.

will

Ditto: "Canon is justifiably considered a ‘World Class’ company. I think there is more to the story here."

Specifics, please. What Canon model? After you bought a Refurbished copy in January, how had the camera been used and cared for? In what sort of conditions was it used? Did Canon have any suggestions as to why it stopped working as expected? Canon is justifiably considered a ‘World Class’ company. I think there is more to the story here.

I must agree with those in this string who have pointed out, and criticized, the intemperate tone and incomplete facts in op's original post. If the op was looking for more than an "amen chorus" of responses supporting his blanket condemnation of Canon's support policies, a neutral nonjudgemental statement of the facts would have no doubt yielded a nonjudgemental discussion of his issue. There is too much experience and wisdsom in this forum to expect otherwise. However, it would have no doubt been a discussion that was much briefer than this one. Words matter.

I just had my first bad experience with Canon. I was at the beach for a photo surf shoot, and the camera shutter just kept going off. Pulled the battery out to soft reset, no solution. Call Canon service, they tell me the same thing, no solution
They recommend sending the camera in for repair. It will be fixed and I will have a 6 month warranty. I just got it back from being refurbished, fully repaired and perfect in JANUARY! To the tune of $180. Then the see the camera is no longer supported for repair, but they offered $30 off my next purchase through them
I was livid. This is supposed to be a world class company. I expected something more like: We are so sorry to hear about this, let us apply the $180 you have already spent toward your next purchase with us".
The representative did offer a cheaper alternative than new, REFURBISHED, they come with a 6 month warranty. Felt like I have been there and done that

JUST DISGUSTED WITH CANON. BUYER BEWARE
I just had my first bad experience with Canon. I... (show quote)

Refurbished canons usually come with a 12 month warranty

chg_canon. Thank you for your excellent advice and unwavering wisdom. You certainly belong on a web site

FYI and to clarify for the non English comprehension and even offer additional insight
The camera was repaired 8 months ago. They also failed to mention that in the future, they would no longer be supporting this camera
Yes, it broke after the 6 month warranty
Although you don't think anyone should care (least of all yourself) I think that a world class company should care

The post was offered to give some additional insight into Canon and their repairs. With a little luck, you will never need the repair services. But if you do, I hope that you get someone who cares as much as you and tells you to put it on the shelf next to your Atari and iPhone 2
chg_canon. Thank you for your excellent advice ... (show quote)

On these forums you will ALWAYS encounter cheap shot artists who only want to insult and not to inform or help. Try not to let them throw salt into the wound.

Lower end consumer camera introduced over 8 years ago.
5 model #'s have been introduced since then.
My 10D has not been repairable for years now and when it dies it will be put on a shelf as my first digital camera.
Still using it though for work and on the beach and other such environments.

Sorry but some of us come from a world where 8 years old is not ancient history.
