Looking for suggestions for a day trip from Venice next month. Would prefer travel by train or coach, but rental car not out of the question. Padua, Vicenza or Verona are probably the most obvious choices, but I really don't know much about them. Burano is already a seperate day on the schedule.

My main interest is photo ops, but I'm the only photographer in our group of four.

Recommendations and suggestion for what to see there appreciated.

It's been a long time, but I found Padua fascinating, especially if you are interested in art. Anywhere in Italy is filled with photo ops.
Have you considered visiting one of the islands in Venice such as Murano where there are glass making artisans?

You can't go wrong going in the direction of any of the places your have mentioned. For me many of the photo ops would be landscapes along the way, especially this time of the year, and a rental car would give you so much more flexibility for photo stop-ops. Verona is beautiful, it is the most ambitious drive but offers the most scenic countryside. Have fun! Hope you are staying in Venice long enough to enjoy the luxury of taking a break from Venice!!

Trieste makes a nice day trip from Venezia. Maxmillian’s castle is there and worth the tour.

Whereas Burano and Murano are the obvious tourist stops maybe conside Torcello. Nothing obviously touristy but this is reputedly the origin of Venice. There are few residents but it has a pleasant bucolic atmosphere and a huge basilica with ancient frescoes inside. Padova is highly recommended just 30 minutes by train from Venice. There is the magnificent space of Prato delle Valle which really is lovely. S.Antonio's basilica is worth a visit with soaring pillars and beautiful ceiling apart from anything else that might catch your eye. They say no photos but you will see plenty doing so as I did myself. The star of Padova (Padua) is the cappella degli Scrovegni about a 10 minute walk from the station. The whole of the inside is painted with frescoes depicting the life of Christ and the work was done just over 800 years ago by the genius Giotto. Only 25 visitors at a time permitted fora timed entry. You must book your time and turn up before as late entry not permittd but it is well worth the effort. Photography is permitted without flash or tripods. The frescoes are stunning and there is a guide/caretaker who will explain if needed(as long as you speak Italian) but it isn't really necessary. In Venice ascending the campanile outside St.Mark's is worthwhile for the vistas across the lagoon to Lido, the rooftops of Venice and the Dolomites. If yoou have time, the lovely fishing port of Chioggia is like a mini Venice but much quieter, picturesque and superb fish restaurants. It takes about an hour by bus but there is also a ferry.

Beautiful area. If you go to Verona, check out the "supposed" balcony of Romeo & Juliet.

Get a camera strap with a cable in it. B & H has them about $30.00

Italy is known for cut (your strap) and run.

OP here. Thanks all for the suggestions. Meeting with our travel companions tonight to discuss. Udine and Trieste seem a bit far for a day trip, but may be part of a future trip to the Dolomites / Austria / Slovenia

Thanks, but no thanks. I've been to Italy many times and never had a problem. I would rather loose my camera than loose my optimism and faith in humanity other than taking simple precautions.

More likely in Rome or Naples. Not going to happen in Venice.

Trieste is easily done by train. I made a day trip with my Italian friend from Venice although admittedly, any city needs much more time, but we weren't rushed and it has a very different feel to it having been annexed to Austria. Miramare is also easily visited on the same day by bus.

Agreed. A walled city that surprised me when we were there for a meeting.
