What would you do? Here is what happen. I was down by the river taking comparison shots with a Nikon DX with a super zoom on it and an Olympus Micro 4/3 with a super zoom. But that’s not the story.

The problem is that I broke one of my cardinal rules. “When you take the lens cap off it is immediately placed in your pocket.” I broke the rule and placed the lens cap on the hood of the card. I finished the shoot and drove home. Less than a mile. That evening I drove to the store. Less than three houses down the street this black thing comes flying up at the windshield. I flinch thinking it is a bird about to hit the car. Upon returning home I have that sick feeling, did I put the lens cap back on the lens? Quick check, no lens cap on the Nikon superzoom. Quick go out and walk down the street. No lens cap. Check the next morning. No lens cap. Ask the neighbors. No lens cap. Crap, there goes a quick thirty five dollars.

So for me at home it means a telephone call to B&H to order a new one but my question what would you do if you were on a safari or some other location far removed from a quick replacement?

What I would do? I would get different lens caps! The most I ever paid was an overprized 5 bucks for one!

The problem with those lens cap tethers is that the sticky dot will sometimes split, half on the cap, rest on the tether. Either that or they just don't stay stuck.

Maybe not wise to go shooting on laundry day.

No.... Back in the day, Mom kept me busy on laundry day.
Now I'm the one who determines when laundry is, so there's never a conflict :-)

I have found that there are 3rd party lens caps and body caps too which cost a lot less--even in BIG diameters. Also, for name brand filters and caps and hoods, Amazon is cheaper and fro Prime members shipping is free. In addition, KEH usually had a stock of all the above including great prices on filters in excellent shape.

As for a substitute, I carry clear filters to use in hostile environments like the beach or similar places with flying debris of sticky stuff like factories, shops and kitchens. It will keep junk off the lens. And outside the bag, keep the hood on the lens. (they're cheap at Amazon, too. These off brand caps, and hood are NOT in the light path, and pose NO danger to the camera (if they fit) or image, so save the $$. They are universally over priced by the OEM's.

The caps are not expensive. I bought a 77mm Sigma pinch cap from B&H for like $10 + $3 shipping.

Linda, Saran would work--sort of--but is not strong like a lens cap. Why not use a rubber band with a piece of chamois or thick fabric? Maybe microfiber cloth... When packing lenses, I wrap them in a microfiber cloth--a bag of them the size of a washcloth is cheap at the discount store. That is still not strong, but better than Saran...I too was surprised at a $35 cap, unless there is something odd about it. I have a 105mm diameter lens for 8x10 camera, and had S. K. Grimes make a cap, and that was over $100, but that is a bit different. These caps must stay on, yet slide off without disturbing the lens if you use it for your "shutter." I think they have a video on how they are made--harder than it sounds, and it is not "just plastic"--it is expensive vinyl. Even plastic caps would be expensive if you just made one--the tooling and production cost would be the same as it would be for thousands of them.

I had to replace a lens cap for my Panasonic G7 14-140 mm lens and it didn't cost anywhere near $35 For my SX50, I used plastic wrap (like Saran Wrap) and a rubber band, but didn't have access to those 'til I got home. Never considered the dilemma if traveling. Guess having a spare is a good idea, just like batteries and cards.

First I apologize if I'm repeating but I'll confess up front that I've not read through this thread and technically this is not an answer to what I'd do if I lost my cap but rather what I do to keep from losing my cap. Every one seems to hate those stings that attach your cap to your camera. I came across this and for $8.96 thought I'd give it a try. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/924093-REG I clip it to my camera strap and then clip my cap to this clip. It holds amazingly well. I've not misplaced or lost a lens cap since I started using it on my camera. It works for various size lens caps so you only need one per camera.

I lost my cap. I went to Amazon and bought a replacement but this one had a string attachment so I won't lose it again.

I'm with you, brother. Why complicate things. All of my pants have pockets. Ain't like I'm gonna lose one of them somewhere.
