Sticking my neck out for your comments

These two shots were taken in Iceland this July. The first was in the bar area of the hotel, a moody piece. The second was a shot from the upper floor down the spiral staircase, leaning precariously over the railing while my wife screamed invective's about my position (which made me more nervous).
Both were taken with my Canon D80 and a Tamron XR DiII SP 17-50 1:2.8.
First:1/10, APriority, -1 EV, f 2.8, ISO 320 @35mm.
Second: 1/15, Ap Prio, -1 EV, f 2.8, ISO 320, @35mm.

Both are fine with pleasing blue / purple light. The bar would benefit from a run through a noise processing tool to clean up the specs of colors in the darker areas. You might also level the bar against the bottom of the frame. It would slightly change the image, but might accomplish cropping away the final support that distracts in the upper left corner of the image. If you don't change the level, try pulling in the left margin slightly to remove that support.

For the stairwell, I'd prefer a sharper depth of field. With your camera, you had headroom for a smaller aperture and higher ISO at the same shutterspeed. You could have set a focus point at the center of the frame, say at f/5.6 on the 3rd spiral before the circle. Or, maybe on the second circle in from your position. Or even on the grid above the stairs. What's lacking in this version is nowhere in the image, where the eyes are drawn, is there a sharp focus on the details. Also, you could clone-out the out of focus flowers in lower right corner.

#2 could be a stronger composition with a little cropping. I will show what I mean if you like.

Thanks, CHG_CANON, I'll see what I can do with your suggestions over the next few days and see if my software, Faststone, can implement those changes (or my knowledge of it). I also use Paintshop Pro 9 for some processing.
I appreciate your looking in and helps. It makes me think more when I take up my camera!

I have photographed that staircase in Iceland twice. I took the image from the bottom up and from the top down. I used a Nikon D750 with a Rokinon 14 mm lens. Settings were ISO 1000, f3.2 1/160 -3.

I do think your white balance was off and you might have used a higher ISO. This would have helped with a sharper image.

Thanks so much. I wanted to show the difference in using a higher ISO. Especially when not using a tripod.
