Resetting File Numbers For Nikon

I am wondering if I can start my file numbering over at 0001? I have a Nikon D850 and according to the Custom Setting d7 you can reset it when it is turned off or hit the reset button. HOWEVER, when you again set it to ON the numbering reverts back to where it was originally.

I am about to take a trip and my numbering will roll over in about 2,000 photos of which I will probably far exceed so I would like all the photos from this trip to be in number sequence.

Thank you!

Dave

Have you tried formatting all your cards? I seem to think that drops it back to 0001. But, that's a vague observation as I don't regularly format my cards, rather just delete.

If you sort the images by capture time, they fall in the time-sequential order. You can take that time-order and then rename the files and force a sort order on the file names.

Thank you, yes I always reformat the cards after putting them on my computer, but the numbering happens in the camera somehow and not related to changing or reformatting the cards.

The second suggestion would be an option if there is no way to start it over in the camera.

Thanks

I already said that does not work. "File numbering is reset to 0001 when a new folder is created, the memory card is formatted, or a new memory card is inserted in the camera. Note that a new folder is created automatically if a picture is taken when the current folder contains 5000 pictures"

I don't constantly want it reset...

If I'm reading your comment correctly, try instead reformatting the card(s) in the camera.

Just verified this with my camera (D610)
Option set to OFF
Formatted card - took a picture - it was numbered 0001 (as expected) -
Formatted the card
Copied a photo I took awhile ago into the empty folder (photo number is 040), and snapped a new photo - the new photo has number 041 - and follow on pics were numbered accordingly - 042, 043, etc...
So, if you copy the last picture you shot back into the folder of the new or formatted folder - it will continue from that number -

I think this is what you are looking for - and since you can change the first 3 characters of the file name, you can put in a trip code of choice...

As far as I know, the numbering sequence in the Nikon series is the same, but try it with your camera and make sure it works - Hope this helps...

Sounds like a work around for sure! Won't work for me at this time as I take many many focus shifting sequences (landscapes) that automatically assign a new folder each time. On this trip I won't have electricity for the first 10 days so wouldn't be using a computer to copy a file each time into every folder. Under different circumstances it could be done.

Thanks

How about just renaming the files on import? Programs like Lightroom, PhotoMechanic and others look at the time stamp and use that to sequence the file numbers.

Does that change the file name in the metadata?

I would strongly advise renaming your files on import to something meaningful. 10 years from now if you look into your folder and see a file DSC_4592 you won't have a clue what it's a photo of without opening it. OTOH, if you look into your folder and see a file "Suzie's Birthday 20180825 175547" you will know immediately what the subject is without having to open it up.

While it's true that Lightroom doesn't care what the file name is, and you can find things through keywords, just think what will happen in 100 years when you're (probably) not around to look for the files. Your descendants (most of whom will not be able to use Lightroom) will be looking for family photos but with 16384 files with a name like DSC_nnnn, they will give up very soon. A file name that means something will help them out.

If you don't use Lightroom or some other program with Digital Asset Management, it's even more important to have your files recognizable by name.

Renaming your files is a secondary strategy to make your files useful in the future.

If you do it in Lightroom, yes. I don't know about the other apps, which I no longer use for renaming. Also if you do the name change in LR it's best if you continue to use LR for all of the file management.

I am not trying to be w wise guy, but I use both the date and number to catalogue my photos. I carry an external hard drive and copy the photos from my SD card to a folder of the day on the HD. It is unlikely that I will ever go over 1000 photos each day, so the date is the most important way to categorize in my work flow. When I get home, it is then very simple to copy the entire external hard drive to my hard drive at home.

We are currently on a cruise and I have already filled 2 64 gig cards with photos, I shoot jpg and Raw in my Nikon D3400, that way I can quickly review the photos each night and purge those which are clearly not worth bringing home.

In the D850 and D500 look at D7 - "File Number Sequence" in the Custom Controls. Explains how to deal with this. Would imagine the same function is also in othert models.
