Reminds me of all the wonderful shots I got of Marmots and Picas at the top of Trail Ridge Road years ago. When the shutter count reached 38 I realized I had forgotten to put film in the camera.

95% of the time I either 'cable' or wifi my images from the camera to the computer, without removing the memory card. Then, I format the card, in camera, just after.

OK, how many of your would admit to these f--- ups?
1. Took 200 images in Prague, in extremely hot weather (90+ degrees), and discover I had no card inserted. BTW: they were wonderful images.
2. Took about the same number of images in Vienna and discovered no card in the camera.
3. My wife was sick in Budapest so we spent a day in the hotel room. No images.
4. We had one more day after our tour ended (today). Hired a private driver and guide to take us around the city, specifically for photo scenes and vantage viewpoints. He was terrific and added history of the country as we drove from site to site. Fabulous sites!!! Fabulous images!! Get back to hotel, paid him $180 & a $40 gratuity for three hours. Could not wait to get back to hotel room to review the images. Guess what? No images!! For the 3rd time, NO Card!!

I could not understand why I did not receive a "no card" warning and how the camera took images without a card. Took out the book (Alexander White) and discoverd I had not enabled the feature in the voluminous menu. DUH!! DUH!!. My father, only in jest, used to day to me, "you're getting dumber by the day"! He was right!!

No lectures please or how to prevent such mistakes. I've been whipped enough.

I'll soon recover and forgive myself.

I am truly amazed that you openly admit your error....especially to this forum. I admire your character and oversight omission, and accept this confession as a lesson for all of us. Thanks for your candid remarks, and let us all be careful and vigilant. Sorry for the extreme discomfort this has caused.

Sorry about your plight. I wish you a speedy recovery!

I am always surprised manufacturers don't make the setting a default to not shoot with no card present. However, there can also be moments where such would not matter. I was taking photos of my wife-to-be at Niagara Falls during the winter and I envisioned some very nice images of her in her long, fur coat with the icicles and white snow in the background. The camera had a memory card in it and understood that it was there. I shot one after another. Unfortunately, the photos did not write to the card nor did it write to the internal memory. All the shots were lost. Perhaps I would have caught the problem if I had been chimping and reviewing. However, they are still in MY memory until my "memory card" goes defunct. Out of those memories, the best was with our encounter with the police and the border patrol---we were there rather late, in fact, I think we were the only ones there.

Digital images lost but not the memories, the moments, or the experience...

Just another reason not to get a Sony. I had one, it was stolen. I replaced it with an Olympus.

I do understand how it is possible to forget the camera card in a laptop and be out with the camera---I have done it, in the very remote Pyrenees, as one example. I was lucky: I just happened to walk by an all-purpose store in a small village that sold camera cards, so got another one--slow, but worked (as it would have been several hours drive to go back and get the one in the computer). But I did have the camera set to don't take pics without the card. I do this with all of my cameras including my Sonys and Canons; it is not a problem with the camera brand, but you do have to set it up to not take the pic without the card. I also don't take the pic unless it is in focus (most of the time)--I will sometimes change that one.

Where one might blame the camera is that the logic of Sony's menus isn't always obvious and even in its p&s cameras or fixed lens cameras, there are a lot of them to work through. This could be hard to do when you make a mistake traveling and are on a fast-moving itinerary.

But the Sony cameras are really good in terms of iq, which is a very good reason to get a Sony.

Three Times??? You have my sympathy. I always put the card immediately back in the camera without fail.

OMG, why wouldn't the warning be the default? I am so sorry for your loss. Wow!

Probably for the same reason that the default is low-quality JPEG for the E1 and E3. That was bad, but you beat me by a huge margin. The topic title really does say it all. You deserve and have my heartfelt sympathy. Have you learned your lesson?

We all make mistakes. I had a morning shoot and came home to import them. I was so excited as the images built on the screen that I started looking at them. I had another shoot in an hour so I popped the card out of the reader, put it in my camera and formatted the card. Then I realized that I never hit the import button - all gone!!!

So sorry to hear of this. We all make mistakes and I’ve done it more than once. In the film days I even had a roll of film not engage in the advance mechanism properly and after a spectacular race found one picture with 36 exposures on it. LOL.

Along with changing the menu option to not allow shooting without a card may I suggest buying another card and keeping one in camera and the other in your card reader or computer’s card slot. Then at end of day you exchange the card from camera with the one from reader/computer to ensure this doesn’t happen in future. Even with menu set to not allow taking picture you still need a card and might not have access to purchase if you didn't remember to replace it.

I think we've all done that, or something that was just as painful! I once was observing an aerial battle between an osprey and a bald eagle. The osprey hit the eagle, and the eagle hit the lake - hard! Thought it was over, but after the eagle came to his senses a bit, he began SWIMMING out of the lake by using his wings as paddles! I had a long lens, the eagle wasn't very far away, and the images were going to be EPIC! Imagine, a swimming eagle! Yep, no card - it was in my computer on my desk, just where I left it. No images, and I will hopefully not ever, ever do that again! ;-)

Some sort of paraphrase of the old saying "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." should apply here. I haven't had this happen to me but I have been fooled by setting bracketing for a shot and then forgetting its on and wondering in post processing why my subsequent shots are either OK or under or over exposed. So "duh" for me too.

My digicams have always reminded me when there was no card in the slot. Some will not take a photo without that card. What's up with yours?

Somewhere in the past week I was reading the specs on one of the newer Leica digicams. As I recall the data included one item that evoked "Well, it's about time for that !!! It had 8 GB of onboard memory and no card was actually necessary !!!! If a card is inserted later you can transfer that 8 GB to the card at your convenience.
