I have two cameras: Canon D6 mk II and a T6s. My go to lens on the D6 mk II is an EF 24-105 L-Series and on the T6s it is an EF-S 18-135. I know the 24-105 is a superior lens and it should be, but the EF-S 18-135 is very very close for a lot less money if you have a crop sensor camera. I shot over 2000 pictures in Alaska and was never disappointed. It is a crystal clear lens. I would never get rid of mine!

John ... question: there are three versions of the EF-S 18-135 ... the original, the STM, and the newer USM. Which one do YOU use?

My lens is the STM. When I bought it, it came with the camera. I had no idea of the difference of STM and USM at the time. It really is almost as good a lens with regard to IQ as the more expensive L-Series 24-105.

I only have Tamron lenses (10 - 24mm, 18 - 270mm and 200 - 400mm) for my Nikon D750 and get excellent photos from them. I think they are a good, less expensive option.

A reminder, if your camera does not have a full frame sensor, you will have to double the listed lens focal length.

Not double, unless you are talking about m4/3, but this thread is about an APSC canon camera, so it is 1.6x, not double.

Oh, okay ... you're in the middle of the pay grade, then ... better than the original, but not as good as the newer USM version. The L series are extremely fine lenses, but a couple of the NON-Ls are just as good ... that's one of them - the USM 18-135, along with the EF-S 15-85 IS USM ... thanks, John ....

LP ... I have the 18-270 - one extremely fine lens ... I also had the Tamron SP 10-24 ... sold it ... decided the Sigma EX 10-20 HSM was giving me a better end product.

I also have some other Tamrons, including the SP 70-300 VC USD - a real winner, and the 18-200 XR Macro ... a real class act. Tamron makes some superb lenses!!!

BTW ... it's not double, with a crop camera ... the length correlates to 1.5x on Nikon, Sony, Pentax DSLRs, and 1.6x on Canon DSLRs ...

I’m going to pick one up. I’ve read the on-line reviews and you and Alan have both recommended it. That’s good enough for me!

The Canon is a very good lens - but more expensive and slower f-stops than Sigma 17-70...... just sayin'.

Good, Sally ... you won't regret it, I assure you ... it's an everyday lens, with macro (at 14") ... only thing - it doesn't come with a hood ... it's an extra option ...

It's not exactly cheap, but compared to L lenses, it is ... see if you can find it on sale ... the normal price is $795 ... you should be able to get it for $50-75 less ...

If you do, the difference will more than pay for a dedicated hood ... it must be dedicated, or you will wind up with shaded corners ...

But, to tell you the truth - in most shooting situations, you don't need one, anyway .... Good Luck! ... Enjoy!!!

Why, thanks, Gene ... coming from you - that sounds like praise, indeed ... a big change ...

I had thought about putting up some wide-angle shots taken with my 10-20 Sigma, alongside wide shots taken with the EF-S 15-85 IS USM ...

Takes so long to find them all, though ... I'll work on it ... thanks for the suggestion, Gene ...
