I put it on my wishlist. Looking at comments on Amazon, however, it would seem a good idea to apply a map waterproofing like Aquaseal Map Seal.

Definitely stop at the Jenny Lake Visitor Center and also the one at the north edge of Jackson for the Elk Refuge area - we were there in April and the ranger marked on the park map where animals were sighted. I also follow the Grand Teton NP Facebook page, and there are frequent tips on wildlife viewing spots, as well as other scenic views. All along the main road are pullouts for great scenic views. Gros Ventre Road is great for wildlife. Along the Snake River Horsheshoe Bend area are moose feeding. Just so many opportunities for photos. When you follow the highway up from Jackson, you round a bend and all of a sudden are the most spectacular mountains in all their glory. Have fun!. Can't give you restaurant info since we had a kitchenette cabin at Elk Antlers Inn and never ate out. I did go to lunch at Genevieve's in Jackson - an artisan deli type of eatery, great salmon nicoise salad there.

Don't miss Mormon Row to get photographs of historic buildings with Teton background and Cunningham Cabin where you can get photos of the Tetons framed by the windows in the cabin. So many great photo opportunities everywhere you go that you shouldn't have any problem with or without a guide. There was a good restaurant at Teton Village with lots of interesting memorabilia on the walls and ceilings. Don't exactly remember the name, but I think it had something to do with Moose, maybe Mangy Moose or something like that. Tetons are probably my favorite place to photograph.

Spent two days with Mike Jackson (bestofthetetons.com) in early spring. (He usually does one day outings.) Well worth it, learned a ton about photo technique and his knowledge about local wildlife and views is phenomenal. His site also has maps and recommendations. Also recommend stopping by the GTNP Visitor Center, they're more than helpful.

You should plan for a stop at the National Museum of Wildlife Art just north of Jackson. You have to watch for the signs because from the highway it looks like a small ruin. Inside, however, it’s spectacular! Bronze castings greet you before you get inside. Piles of art by Western artists, including a massive painting by Robert Bateman (The Chief) of a bull bison in a blizzard that takes up an entire wall. https://www.wildlifeart.org/

Snake River Grill in Jackson is excellent but generally requires a reservation. I don't think you need a guide to tour the park. Great photo opportunities along the inner road and the hiway. Fall scenics include Church of the Transfiguration, corral and field area on inner road close to Taggart Lake parking area, Jenny Lake has walking trail along E. side, Taggart lake trail has a good reasonably short hike with good scenics (a stream flows beside part of the hike), Oxbow Bend is great especially at sunset & is interesting at sunrise when most photographers are there, northern edge of park along hiway has good fall color including Jackson Lake and the mountain range, road to top of Signal Mountain has great views, Antelope Flats road off the hiway offers the classic barn pictures. The visitor's centers at Moose and Coulter Bay can provide you with maps and give you great advice. I hope you have a great trip!! kmctague

Thanks for the reference to Moose’s book and endorsement of Mike and Daryl. Just got it.

I think I am going to try it on my own without a guide this time, although I am sure I would learn a lot from mike or Daryl. Just have to absorb all the info and plan the days. Not a once in a lifetime trip. I will be back and want to try it in the winter.

Definitely go back in winter!! There are many fewer people there and it is so beautiful! A few pics to tempt you:

We were there in 2016 & 2017--absolutely beautiful. Oxbow Bend, Mormon Row, Schwabacher's Landing, Moose-Wilson Road, Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake, several overlooks. Sunrise is a great time because the rising sun lights up the mountains! I spent a lot of time researching the area before we went. Sometimes other photographers you run into can be quite helpful too and will share other locations to shoot. Hope you have a great time, and be sure to share you photos with us!

Staying at Jenny Lake Lodge and Rust Parrot in mid-September. I have read a lot about photography opportunities on UHH and internet. Must admit I am overwhelmed by info.

Should I consider one of the excellent tours or a private guide? Or, can I do it myself?

If you suggest a guide or tour, do you have recommendations?

Recommendations for your favorite restaurants in Jackson?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I did those places in 2009 as part of a 15-day tour of National and State Parks--we had a provided guide for the tour and a dedicated coach. My photos can be viewed here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157622582484503/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/8712554@N02/sets/72157622594876901/. I think the highlight for me, personally, was the raft trip on the Snake River.

Jenny Lake Lodge! For what they charge for a few days, I could get a new Canon 5D Mark iv. You must enjoy it a LOT!

Near Jenny Lake there is an excellent restaurant named Dorian’s, on the right side of road leading to the lake. Jackson has many fine restaurants so you will not have problems finding one to for your needs.
Jenny Lake has a boat service you can take to easily get to the opposite side of the lake. There is also a path there that you can use to hike around the lake. If you like a moderate hike you will surely want to take the hike up to inspiration point and enjoy the great views.
Lots to do in the Jackson area...... ENJOY

Like others have mentioned, don't miss the two hour raft ride down the Snake River with a tour guide. You shouldn't get wet because there are only a few mild rapids.
Great photo ops of the river, Tetons and possible wildlife for $75 bucks a head (as of 2016). To me it was the most memorable part of our visit there....

Could you both reveal the name of the float trip company you used that you were happy with? There are many.
