Lightroom and the Sony a7iii

I have been browsing the UHH website for some time but never registered and thus never posted a question. But it seems I have now run into a problem and need your help.

I have Lightroom on my computer (iMac) but it is the purchased edition (6.14) and not the kind that forces you to pay a monthly fee. All my previous cameras were able to download the RAW files to the library (DMA) including my Fujifilm XT-2. I recently decided to try FF and purchased the Sony a7iii. When I tried to import the Raw photos. they could not be downloaded to the library. Is that camera not supported" . Is Adobe forcing me to change to the monthly rental edition? Or am I doing something wrong? Is there a work around? I also have Luminar 2018 on the computer and they supposedly are going to be coming out with a DMA. What to do.

You just need to update Adobe Camera Raw to the latest version. It's free I think.

Thanks for the reply but I was under the impression that the 6.14 update was to be the final update for my version of LR. Pardon my ignorance, but how would I go about updating ACR? Is ACR included with my copy of LR or would I have to download a separate ACR app? Appreciate the help.

Your life will be much simpler if you purchased the subscription. These unsupported issues are only very temporary. It takes Adobe just a few weeks, and sometimes less, to have a fully working version that supports new, popular cameras and lenses.

You can get ACR here:

https://www.techspot.com/downloads/5294-adobe-camera-raw.html

Pretty soon your Lr6 will become worthless - not to mention the new software is far better and faster. Your choice.

"Pretty soon your Lr6 will become worthless”

This is precisely why I’m in the process of switching to using ON1 and Luminar.

Seems like you have two choices, pay the Adobe monthly ransom or wait for Luminar's DAM. I'd wait for Luminar.

Absolutely. Waiting for Luminar. I can see Adobe gradually increasing their monthly fees over time so long as people continue to be willing to pay the price. I wonder how high they will go before people finally say they've had enough. In addition to the monthly fee, LR really is not the best editor for Fuji raw (RAF) files so it is time for me to bale.

There’s also ON1 18.5--it’s very good, too, and at this point I think it does more than Luminar, though I like it, too.

FYI: I have had the subscription for Adobe's Photography plan since it was first introduced in 2011. It was called the Creative cloud at that time I believe. The fee has not gone up once in the past 7 plus years. However, Adobe does continue to add additional features and update software frequently and seamlessly at no additional charge. I have been extremely happy with the benefits the Photography plan offers. Not only do I get the latest versions of both Lightroom and Photoshop at and incredibly low yearly cost compared to other similar programs, but I also have access to Adobe's expertise, tech support and exceptional training classes and tutorials. When I first signed up, I had the same feeling as you stated, "Adobe gradually increasing their monthly fees over time so long as people continue to be willing to pay the price". Also at that time I was very bitter toward Adobe, because they did not make an affordable version of Photoshop, other than Elements, for the home users. I had used Photoshop for many years prior at work, however my company paid the exorbitant fees. I could not afford to buy my own to even practice at home with. Finally they came out with their subscription plan including Photoshop. I have been happy ever since. If I were to continue buying and upgrading other similar products, it would cost me much more the $120/year.

Regarding the original post by tandemrider, Adobe is not forcing you to subscribe, for you can just get the latest ACR for your camera or use what came with it, or you have the choice to subscribe and not have to encounter issues such as this as frequently.

You can convert your Sony a7iii RAW files to DNG with Adobe's free DNG converter. Your Lightroom 6.14 can download the DNG files. I've done this with my Sony a7r RAW files from the beginning, because of Sony's "lossy" RAW files. Sony has fixed the "lossy" RAW problem in their newer cameras, but converting to DNG does no harm, and you won't need to update your Lightroom 6.14 or get new software or subscribe to Adobe's online version of Lightroom.

So you guys are really great. I downloaded Camera Raw 10.4, converted the images to DNG, and lo and behold I can now use LR to edit or transfer the image to Luminar and everything works (duh!). I will probably go this route for a while but in view of some of the comments, I might give the subscription model a try also as well as giving the ON1 a trial for the free month. I don't think I will have to skip dinners to pay the $120/yr. Thanks so much for all your input. Ask and ye shall receive - at least in this case. Thanks again.

Welcome to America. If you have a good product, why shouldn't you ask the best price you can for it? No one is being "forced" to do anything. If you like LightRoom and want a relatively trouble-free version of it, go ahead and subscribe to it. If you don't like LR, or you don't like subscriptions, don't buy it. Why make it seem like Adobe is a bad guy for charging for their popular product? I don't understand people who say, "I like LightRoom, but I don't want to pay for it -- or, I want to pay for it my way", which is the same thing really.

I couldn’t disagree more. There’s a big difference between actually owning something and renting it. Moreover, buying a program is far, far from indicating that one isn’t willing to pay for it. He does put out the cash or he wouldn’t own it. There’s nothing free about the ownership.

Before Gene51 starts shaking his head --- technically its not a question of ownership (you don't actually own it, you have a right to use it) but rather a question of how you pay for that right. Adobe wants to you pay ad infinitum for that right, recurring revenue is one of a business's sweet spots -- just ask the giant telcom and cable companies. Other companies like ON1 and Luminar offer that right for a one time payment. Adobe will say that they offer free upgrades as part of that package and my response is "suppose I don't want your 'upgrades'?".
