My pocket camera is a Canon S100, part of the series that started it all! The last model, the S120, can be found used for as low as $100, with the sweet spot being about $175 - $200 on eBay. Worth checking out. A "true" pocketable that I would never hesitate in recommending: 12meg, 24mm-120mm equiv, f1.8-f5.7, shoots 1080p, raw and jpeg, wifi, touchscreen, and more.

just bought the Sony RX100 vi to replace my RX100 ii. The ii is the last version to have a 28-100 optical lens but no EVF. the vi has a 24-200 optical lens but is one stop slower. OK the vi is $1200 but you can get the ii new or even used for much less. 1" sensor zeiss lens, a host of settings, can shoot raw movies panoramas and 350 shots per revovable battery charge. My SLRs are Nikons but to walk around a city of village having this in my pocket can't be beat. Even small pocket

I am looking to get a new pocket camera. I’m a canon user. Looking at the SX 730. Would like some advice from users.

I have an SX710HS and I love it. For some place like Disney or Universal, it's light, it's fast, you don't have to stand in the bag check line. It will zoom across the length of the lake at Epcot, yet will focus on fine print less than an inch from the lens. It handles low light well. My 710 does not shoot Raw, but I can live with that. I get better, higher detail close up shots of scale models than I have been able to get with my XSi. The 730 has more zoom than the 710. It does not have a view finder, but I have not found that to be a problem. I too have looked at the 730, but I think I'd like to have a 80D and/or a 24-105L more. I have seen several posted photos taken with all varieties of the SX series.

We have several nice models on the market. The manufacturer is your choice.
Look for cameras with a zoom from 24mm to about 500mm or more, 18 megapixels, EVF - electronic viewfinder plus the screen, RAW files.

The camera size 4.25"x 2.5" will fit into your pocket comfortably.

People suggesting a telephone instead of a camera, should also tell us which telephone has a zoom from 24mm to 700mm?

Over the years I've had several small cameras that I've carried around in my pocket. When I got my latest smart phone I stopped. My favorite pocket camera was a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ5. It was a 6 megapixel masterpiece, about 3 x 2 x 1 inches in size. Eventually all of my pocket cameras succumbed to the same fate, the lens deployment mechanism gave out. Of course, I really carried them in my pocket and so there was dirt and lint and the occasional banging my leg against something. They just couldn't take the punishment although that little Lumix kept going for a couple of years.

I don't think a cell phone camera is all that good and this thread reminded me how much better a "real" camera can be. I think if I was going to buy a pocket camera now, I would look for one where the zoom mechanism is completely behind glass. Most underwater point and shoots are made this way, so that's where I'd begin looking. Waterproof has to make it at least a little more pocket proof.

If you're a Canon man, I'm assuming you want nothing but Canon? But, you may want to reconsider, and look at Sony or Panasonic. The quality of those two Brands for pocket cameras are hard to beat.

Only one or two of the Canon line of pocket cameras have viewfinders. I cannot see a thing on an LCD in the bright sunlight so no viewfinder was a deal killer for me . I looked for over a month and decided on the Sony HX90V. Very small in size (smaller than the Canon 730), fits in your shirt pocket, zooms to 720mm, has an internal flash, pop up viewfinder and priced right. It is almost half the price of the RX100V which does have a larger sensor, and shoots faster, flash and viewfinder, but has almost no zoom. I have several DSLRs so if I need big sensors or low light capabilities I have them. I wanted a quality camera with all the features and a small footprint to carry around with me. I do not own a smart phone and have no interest in them at all. The big brown truck is coming today.

Most pocket cameras (and all cell phones) donot have a viewfinder. Most of the them, when outdoors, you can't see the screen. You just have to guess what you are shooting, then shade the screen to see what you got.

Check it out.

I wanted something pocketable with a larger sensor and viewfinder but still having a zoom lens with range. This was before the 200 came out. I got the Panasonic DMC-ZS100 which is less expensive but less range on the lens. Great camera. All my others are Canon.

I have a friend with a megazoom that doesn't have a viewfinder. She now uses her cell phone only.

I use the Sony CX 240 camcorder -- puting it in my shirt pocket ready for action anytime. It is as big as a beer can and holds a 64 micro chip big as my little finger nail. The cost (if you look for bargains) is a lot better than regular cameras. I just come from Lawrence, Kansas visiting my wife's family and had a great time taking footage in airport terminals and our take offs, etc. I can't see why so any people don't know crap about camcorders! We live in Louisiana and had to fly to Dallas, Texas first to get our connections. I thought about taking my "little" Canon Rebel but opted for the much lighter (less than one-half lb.) camcorder. I like to watch my footage on television (HDMI) before making an Apple movie on my computer.

Opes! I am replying to the wrong man.
