Staying at Jenny Lake Lodge and Rust Parrot in mid-September. I have read a lot about photography opportunities on UHH and internet. Must admit I am overwhelmed by info.

Should I consider one of the excellent tours or a private guide? Or, can I do it myself?

If you suggest a guide or tour, do you have recommendations?

Recommendations for your favorite restaurants in Jackson?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Contact MTShooter. He lives in Billings (has a camera store there). He would be an excellent guide but I don't know if he still has time to do that with the store. I'm sure he would have some ideas.

I will also be there last week in september

Good question. At the minimum do research. Obtain Photo Travelers issues for your areas. If they are detailed enough you could go it alone.

Beware: Jenny Lake restaurant is elegant but requires a sports jacket for dinner.

In was lucky because it was over 90 and they waived the requirement. Dinners were very good, but not spectacular. Service was excellent.

I didn't use a guide-although I often do-because there's so much to see. Not to be supercilious, but make use of golden hours-the mountains are terrific! And, if you are able to find an ephemeral pool (not very likely in Sept), they're great too.

Lots to shoot. Advice from the camera shop fellow sounds worth seeking and following.

Enjoy! (wish I were going)

Bill

And, now that I reflect, The Blue Lion in Jackson was excellent-might still be there? Bill

I did it without a guide. I may have missed some opportunities, but I sure got a lot of neat stuff. I simply looked around to find what would interest me. I do recommend the boat ride.

By all means get the Photo Travelers issues if you can find them. A well traveled area, there are tons of guides. Get some to carry with you as you drive around and explore.

A lot depends on your experience, time and money situation in answer to your question about whether you "need" a tour guide and private versus group. I always find it useful to find a local and go out with them for at least a half day to hear about what is around and find the local "hotspots" for wildlife. So we did use Mike Jackson and would definitely second the recommendation for him! And at a minimum, read his blog, Best of the Tetons as suggested by Pkfish.

PS. We went at the very end of July and had what I would consider successful trip, some of the photos are posted on my flickr site if you are interested:

Great photos. Thanks.

Looked at Mike Jackson's site-very impressive.

Also found Daryl Hunter's ebook--very helpful and good.

I also couldn't find this. One I used in Canada and they have one for Grand Tetons/Yellowstone but didn't use is called Gypsy guide. It was great in Canada. Tells you as you drive (knows your location) and points out areas for scenic photos and even wildlife (which of course is hit and miss, not as good as someone who goes around everyday)!

Will be that way late August Jenny Lake & Jackson, so can give you some latest info about Labor Day. Was told by friend Jenny Lake Visitors Center is very helpful with maps, ranger programs, recommendations, etc. Have always found Ranger Stations helpful too - where the animals currently are, good photo ops, etc.
