Agreed!

We got plastic bags because these same people banned paper bags (Which are biodegradable and come from a renewable resource.). FWIW, I am not a fan of plastic bags - just an observation.

In California, at least, paper bags were never banned. At my grocery, you could always ask for either. Retailers liked plastic bags because a) they were cheaper (and they were giving them away) and b) a thousand plastic bags take up a lot less space than a thousand paper bags.

In Tennessee it is illegal to put an ice cream cone in your front pocket. Read that when I moved here a long time ago.

But, as per my post above, the old flimsy single-use plastic bags have been banned in California in favor of thicker, reusable and recyclable plastic bags.

tut-tut-tut.... LIberal weren't behind the plastic bags. It was the stores. There are much cheaper. The stores' reasoning was clearly demonstrated by a TV report I saw once: The reporter held up a bundle (in her hand), and said: "This is 10,000 plastic bags". Then she showed a fork-lift holding up a pallet load. "And this is 10,000 paper bags"

Also, the way we pack our landfills these days (covering with clay every night to keep the smell down), they are essentially vacuum sealed. NOTHING biodegrades in them. Researchers have dug up 20-year-old landfills and found yellow banana peels.

Plastic Straws are next. Several California cities have banned them, and it will likely soon become the law statewide. Biodegradable straws will be the only option.

Tut-tut-tut: Environmentalists were a strong backer of replacing paper bags with plastic. There stated reasoning was to "save" a tree. No argument that stores moved to plastic, at least in part, due to lower cost.

And I believe that this "saving a tree" theory costs California yearly with deadly forest fires, because they refused to "farm" trees to use, thus thinning the forest and letting new growth take parts of the land that now have full growth, thus allowing fires to spread across huge acreages.

I saw a story on TV which stated that a 6-inch diameter pine tree used 50 gallons of water per day. With the huge number of uncut trees, it's no wonder there are dry soil conditions in those over-forested areas.

I keep wondering why they don't remove trees each year to create Fire Breaks for when forest fires do break out.

The realists have been in favor of this for years. The simple fact, is that the "greens" don't want anything that upsets the "natural" foliage. Clearing out the brush and small trees would go a long way toward preventing the spread of wildfires to homes. The foresters have been ignored in favor of the idiocy of "nature lovers".
