Going to Hawaii and i am looking for suggestions for a SD Card External Hard Drive. Looking for an average price and at least 1TB. I can go with refurbished or new. Thanks!

I use Lacie, they make HDD and SSD versions. SSD is nice but I haven't had a failure on my HDD and I travel with it every week. They come in a rugged colored case so you won't misplace it.

There are several other types out there. Just be sure to get one with a battery source or you'll need external power. Most of them also work for a backup charge for your phone or other device.

I shoot Lexar Professional's, only...300mb/s, 2000X, in my Nikon D7000 , 64GB in slot A, (For NEF's only), and 32GB in slot B for (JPG's)

Very pricey, but worth it. (On Amazon: $120.00 for the 64, and $75.00 for the 32.) They do go on sale once or twice a year where one can save 20-40%!

Interestingly enough, I have never come close to running out of room! Last night, I shot over 550 images, in NEF RAW and JPG-Fine. (3.3gb in JPG, 9.2gb in NEF) (Just love the double slot 7000's!!)

(I probably have misunderstood what the original OP wanted, as I was sorta responding to the quoted comment on cards...so...sorry!)

I had considered an external HD for storage, but after putting in an SSD HD in the laptop, and the laptop having an SD slot, I just copy my image files to my laptop for storage until I get back to the office and move everything to the server and it's RAID drives. Transfer from SD card to the SSD drive in the Laptop only takes about 30 seconds if the SD card is 20% full.

$120.00 for the 64, and $75.00 for the 32 ???? You got "ripped off" price should be around 1/4 of that (or less), eh ?

So I have heard of data storage companies that have had crashes of their hard drives too. As well as being hacked for personal information of the clients.

Multiple redundancy of drives and failover in a 24 hr manned cloud service makes this less likely than a NAS or portable drive.
Everything can be hacked, including your computer and external drive once it is connected to your computer.

What do you do once you put all of your pictures and data into a 1-4 Terabyte, portable external battery powered drive and it crashes?
These drives get bounced around in travel bags, scanned by x ray at airports, mishandled on trips, subjected to foul weather etc.

Again, regardless, the OP indicated he was looking for protection from computer hard drive crash. If you are really concerned, do all of it.

Personally I do the following:
Download my pictures to my laptop if traveling as well as an external ssd.
Once I get home I transfer the files to my server and delete them from my laptop and portable SSD. I also copy them to a NAS. The hard drives on my server are backed up to the cloud nightly.
Triple redundancy. The odds of all three crashing at the same time is very small.
I run automated security and hard drive scans daily. The goal being to try to stop an attack and know before a drive fails so I can transfer the data to another drive.

It does come with SD. There are several other brands with with SD slots for direct transfer as well. They also have a newer model with micro sd. If you just want to transfer without a computer make sure to read description and reviews. Lots of misleading info about portable drives.

Take a look at LaCie. They've been making portable rugged drives for several years and seem very reliable. They have different sizes, versions and prices that might be what you need. They use Seagate drives and come with data warranty. Not sure how reliable that service is as I've never needed it. I travel with mine around rural Alaska every week, it gets banged around and moved between travel bags. Maybe lucky but I've never had a failure. They are sold at most major retailers. Maybe you can find one locally to take a look at. They have some new versions that are even better. Someday I'll replace mine with SSD version. Hopefully before failure. Have fun in Hawaii.

This has been mentioned in UHH before. I believe what the OP is looking for is an HD he can backup his SD cards to without a computer. This WD HD was mentioned before.

I believe that this drive is available in several sizes. Google it and you may find a refurbished one.
