I am looking for a walk around FX lens to complement my Nikon 85 1.8, 50 1.4, Nikon 20-35 2.8 lenses. I had a Nikon 28-300 for my Nikon D800 and thought the lens was soft and heavy.
My plans are to purchase a Tamron 150-600 Sport or a Nikon 200-500. I am now looking at a lens to fill in. My thoughts are 70-300 VR FX lens.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Before I answer, what kind of photography do you do with a walk around lens?
My sense you are not doing much walking in the North Pole. You are busy making toys?

I walk around with whatever lens I think I need. That could be anything from a 14-24 F2.8 to a 150-600mm and everything in between.

The workshop is very busy and I am catching up to the Christmas demands. My pictures include Santa pictures, wildlife, sunrise, etc.

Thanks

Nikon's 70-300 is a very good lens, in my opinion - its light, its sharp and its has a fast focus. Been using one for at least 12 years, now have the update

I do not consider a 70-300 VR as a walk around lens. I use the old 28-105 AF-D and I am pleased with the results and I am talking about walk around lenses.
The 24-85 VR could also serve you as a walk around lens. The 24-70 VR is of excellent quality but very expensive.

I have the Tamron 24-70 G2 series which is less than half the cost of its Nikon cousin. I generally leave this on my D750.

Looks like you like the speed of those primes, but need a pretty fast zoom to fill in everything between the short zoom and the longer zoom you are looking to get. My 24-120 f4 Nikon zoom stays on my D750 just about all the time, and to me, is the perfect "walk around" lens.

24-120 f/4 is also my favorite on my D750.

The Nikkor 24-120 is one I use extremely often as a walk around/vacation lens on my D750.

There are times when I wish I had not traded my Nikkor 28-300. I do miss that extra reach that I do not have on the Tamron 24-70.

Just returned from Grand Canyon, Zion and Monument Valley tour. Nikon 750 with 24-120 was all I needed.

I have the 70-300 VR FX and am very happy with it. It is a great compromise of value, quality and weight. You can spend thousands more for the same range of focal lengths if you are rich. If you are like me and think in terms of 35 mm focal lengths from the film days, that is the equivalent of 450 mm max, which gives you enough reach for most situations. Plus, with the VR you can hand hold in good light.

I would suggest you get a Tamron 24-70mm G2. Which has already been mentioned. It has great reviews too.
