But neither Nikon nor Canon nor Sony did that. I think Pentax did license their K mount. The 4/3 and M4/3 also has an open specifications I think. But I think with about 3 lenses at introduction is sufficient as most people won't buy a bunch of lenses with their new camera right away. Also if they are Nikon DSLR users they can certainly use their existing lenses while waiting for more lenses to be introduced. Nikon was a lens manufacturer first and camera manufacturer second so they wouldn't have problem making lenses for their cameras.

I guess we will see. using an adapter will be a kludge at best. - larger and heavier than will be well balanced.

Wonder if Nikon’s new mount will follow the worldwide convention of righty tightee?

SS it is likely though as the sensor, if 45 megapixels, may be based on the D850 sensor, which was manufactured by Sony. I would take odds on that being the case. Give Sony its due for helping out their longtime client, Nikon. Cheers

That may be, BUT, he said, ”will continue to make”!!!
I’m saying, where’s the guarantee?!

The adapter is temporary. Certainly Nikon would eventually want to sell all the lenses needed.

Nikon is in the most precarious financial status of the big three, Canon, Sony, Nikon. Nikon needs to make and keep as much profit as they can from their new mirrorless gear as possible, not split it with other makers. That is the reality. Cheers

We don't know that it isn't already happening. Otherwise wouldn't there be patent infringement issues?

If you want to patent something you have to reveal how you do it. Many company would rather keep them as their trade secret rather than filing for patent.

Nikon already applied for the patent on the Z mount. Something like that isn't going to be a secret 15 seconds after they go on sale.

The mount may be revealed once they go on sale, but folks it takes more than just copying a mount. You have to get the software codes and the embedded lens-camera algorithms to make it all work for autofocusing and aperture control. THAT is the secret sauce that has to be discovered and decoded by any third-party lens maker. If it was as simple as just copying the mount, everyone could make working lenses for every mount almost instantly. You have to know how these things work folks. Cheers

It's not nearly as hard as it used to be. It will be interesting to see how quickly third party lenses appear on the market.

Yes yes ! This is one of the problems third party manufacturers have and getting their lenses to af properly. Look at all the struggles Sigma has . I’ve heard that Tamron pays the royalties to Nikon on the autofocus system .

It's always a secret but the third party manufacturers always figure it out but they changed a bit overtime to cause third party lenses not to work right. You know that kind of problem happened with Sigma lenses in Nikon F mount. But how quick they will release lenses really depend on how well the bodies are sold.

Tamron just recently had embarrassing autofocusing struggles with their new release, their 28mm-75mm f2.8 lens for Sony E-mount. It took over six weeks of work (after its heralded release) and a firmware update (ultimately with Sony's help) to get it to autofocus correctly in video shooting on its intended mirrorless Sony cameras. Sigma's newly released line of ART Series E-Mount lenses for Sony still have hiccups at times with autofocus as testers have shown. They still dont perform as well as native Sony lenses. IT HAS NOT been easy for even the two BEST third-party lens makers (Tamron and Sigma) to get it completely right with the lens-camera algorithms. You are mistaken if you think it is easy or will be easy. That is not the reality without help from the native brand manufacturer. Cheers

Ford was not bailed out, GM and Chrysler were.
