I would imagine one of the selling points in the beginning of the new cameras will be lens availability from 3rd party. Nikon would be very slow to sell if it offers very few lenses, but would sell much better with the help of the 3rd party manufacturers. If Nikon were wise, it would have the mount specs and prototype already out to the 3rd party guys before they even market the camera body. This is especially true if the camera is intended for pro level buyers. They (Nikon/Canon) are much more likely to sell if they know there will be a bunch of Sigma's and Tamron's top lenses available for the new box! In the long term they will make lenses that will outclass the competition because they will be specially configured for the camera processor, and they will not lose much by letting the 3rd parties in for an early bonanza. And short term it will mean much quicker sales of the new body.

Not to worry CatMarley, Sony will still continue to make sensors for Nikon, even for their new Mirrorless...

Wise or unwise I am quite sure that Nikon doesn't release the mount specs ever to third party lens manufacturers. They will have to reverse engineer the mount to make their lenses.

I agree with you BebuLamar, but maybe Nikon will make some future financial agreement with maybe Sigma or Tamron. Or NOT, and just keep it to themselves for their own lens line and keep the sales for Nikon. . But yes they wouldn't ever give away the specs and algorithms.

I have been enjoying this thread. I wonder when the time comes that we have real facts if the thread will go 10 pages.

Have you noticed posts on equipment get far more traffic than posts on the technical and creative aspects of photography. A new camera model is not going to make us better photographers.

It will if your old camera quit working.

Bill_de , We all love the excitement of new stuff, especially stuff we might want to try out. Cheers and let's hope the new Nikon and Canon models are winners. Doesn't mean I will be switching back from Sony, wait until you see their upcoming gear, but real competition and real quality choice is good for us all.

No it won't make us better photographers but we might take better photos while we are not better.

What I’d like to see (great time to do it with an emerging technology) is a standard mount lens. Fits all makes/models.

Like Micro 4/3?

Sounds like Nikon fanboys will get some of their own medicine, since initially the native lens selection will be extremely limited.

Maybe they can put the old driveshaft back into it ?!?!

SS it is likely though as the sensor, if 45 megapixels, may be based on the D850 sensor, which was manufactured by Sony. I would take odds on that being the case. Give Sony its due for helping out their longtime client, Nikon. Cheers

CatMarley, maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I am sure Nikon is counting on their folks with large Nikon lens collections to use the available adapters to get by while they and third party lens makers develop new mirrorless lenses. It took a while for third-party lens makers to get the Sony algorithms right before they could make third party lenses that actually worked well in E-Mount. Don't expect lightning to strike , and the entire photo world to completely change in an instant in the beginning of these highly anticipated releases, and then you wont be disappointed when everything you wish for is NOT all there in the beginning. That is just NOT realistic thinking. There will probably be teething pains for both Nikon and Canon here.

Hey I hope both Nikon and Canon succeed, I have said that all along. REAL competition will keep them all innovating and not resting on their laurels . I certainly don't expect Sony to move aside for either Nikon and Canon in the fullframe mirrorless market, especially with Sony's image sensor technology leadership. Odds are the new Nikon mirrorless will have its image sensor built by Sony, like the one in the D850. Cheers
CatMarley, maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I ... (show quote)

If I were Nikon, I would license the mount to the 3rd parties and get a royalty on every lens they sell with the new mount. Everybody could make money a lot faster that way.
