It took a while for third-party lens makers to get the Sony algorithms right before they could make third party lenses that actually worked well in E-Mount. Don't expect lightning to strike , and the entire photo world to completely change in an instant in the beginning of these highly anticipated releases, and then you wont be disappointed when everything you wish for is NOT all there in the beginning. That is just NOT realistic thinking. There will probably be teething pains for both Nikon and Canon here.
Hey I hope both Nikon and Canon succeed, I have said that all along. REAL competition will keep them all innovating and not resting on their laurels . I certainly don't expect Sony to move aside for either Nikon and Canon in the fullframe mirrorless market, especially with Sony's image sensor technology leadership. Odds are the new Nikon mirrorless will have its image sensor built by Sony, like the one in the D850. Cheers

If I were Nikon, I would license the mount to the 3rd parties and get a royalty on every lens they sell with the new mount. Everybody could make money a lot faster that way.
