Yep

There will not be a shortage of native Nikon glass . There is more Nikkor f mount glass than any other brand out there . They have made an adapter for the new Mirrorless Cameras. Plus they have been developing and Patenting new lenses for the new mirrorless mount.
Also Nikon is coming out with a new 500 f5.6 fresnel in f/mount . So I don’t think the DSLR line is going anywhere soon. Designing and developing a new lens like this is very costly. If Nikon didn’t think this lens would be being used on DSLRs and the new mirrorless system it wouldn’t be being developed. They must have confidence in the new product line .
I am a Nikon fanboy and a fan of several other camera companies. Mostly all of them because I love the technology. Even the technology of film and love the film look. So yes Fuji stills , BlackMagic and Arri video cameras . The art and science of designing lens and cameras interests me very much. I like Sony but not a great fan. They push the tech for sure but for the most part don’t like their build quality and customer service. Saying that they are getting better at the build quality.

Sony build quality and service has been great IMHO as a pro. But this is not really about Sony. It is about where Nikon and Canon are going with their mirrorless offerings. Both Nikon and Canon will have adapters to use their current lenses on the new mirrorless cameras, but even branded adapters wont change the shortcomings of using older-designed glass on new electronics. They wont work as well as the new mirrorless lenses that Nikon and Canon have announced they are making to perfectly fit with these new mirrorless cameras. Nikon and Canon fanboys used to bag Sony for not having enough E-Mount lenses. Now there are over 100 E-Mount lens for Sony from Sony, Sigma,Tamron ,Laowa, Zeiss, Rokinon/Samyang, and others. So the turn-around to this is NOW Nikon and Canon fanboys will have to suck it up as their new mirrorless cameras wait for the slow introduction of proper mirrorless lenses. That will be the reality for Nikon users of their new mirrorless cameras. Nikon cant redesign and remanufacture all their lenses into new mirrorless lenses overnight, not possible. And if there was no performance advantage to the new mirrorless lenses, why would Nikon and Canon even bother making them. Turn-around is fair play here for Nikon and Canon fanboys . LOL Cheers

I have used Nikon since the 70's, but have fallen in love with the Fuji mirrorless. I would have gotten the Sony line, but the Fuji was so much smoother in it's handling and it's build quality. I would like it if some of the buttons were a littler higher relief. so that you could locate them by touch a little easier, but that is a matter of body memory and use. I rarely pick up my Nikons any more. Just haven't gotten around to selling the yet!

The Fuji's are a lot nicer than the Sony.

To each their own. I looked at the very nice Fuji cameras, but they could not match the build quality , IQ and professional performance of the top fullframe mirrorless Sonys. I needed the best mirrorless for my professional work, and that is still Sony. No knock on the Fuji's which are fine for many. But Nikon and Canon are not taking aim at Fuji with their new mirrorless releases, they are both gunning for the leader in mirrorless, Sony. Cheers

Nikon certainly not aiming at Fuji because we don't know yet but I don't think their offering would match the quality of the Fuji's. That's my opinion as a long time Nikon fan boy for more than 40 years and still am.

I owned a Fuji X-T2. I have a friend who loves his X-T1 and all the great reviews here on UHH convinced me to buy the X-T2. I even bought the extra grip, several lenses and got a book on how to best set up and use the X-T2, but I never felt comfortable with it and finally sold it.
I wasn't sure what to buy next (I wanted a mirrorless), so sat on the sidelines, waiting and researching other mirrorless options.
As luck would have it, a few months later the Sony A7iii came out to rave reviews. I ordered one, (they were on back-order), but when I finally got mine I felt instantly at home with it and much prefer it to the Fuji I owned.

My point being: which camera is "nicer" is an individual thing... ;-)

This week in a B&H email there was an article/ad about Nikon's new mirrolress DSLR coming soon (see link below). There are rumors about Canon also coming out with their own as well. That's great that they are finally getting into the game. I would expect that these two giant's will knock the socks of Sony with all of years of experience.

But, what was real interesting to me was the confirmation that the Nikon mirrorless will feature a brand-new mount (no official word from Canon yet), one that Nikon claims opens the door for groundbreaking optical opportunities. Now, bringing it home, that puts me in a bind, because I was looking to purchase the Canon 100-400 IS II L lens this year and a new camera in 2019 or early 2020. There is talk about an adapter, but who know how that will work out. My budget is limited and I hate to spend money into a dying line.

Your thoughts on continuing to invest in the current line of DSLR?

I agree with your point completely. While I won't buy any mirrorless but before I bought my DSLR I looked at the Sony A7, Fuji XT-1, Olympus OMD-EM-1, and although I like the Sony for being full frame it was the Fuji that I found had the build quality and the control layout that I wanted. I didn't buy it because it's a mirrorless but once again it's an individual thing.

Are you kidding? All the third party folks will be falling over themselves making lenses for Nikon and Canon. There will be tons of choices just as soon an Nikanon releases the specs for their new mounts, and the 3rd party manufacturers can crank out the mounts!

Most likely they will . Sony is definitely making the best quality sensors . They are the sensor leader. I guess the Panasonic part owned company is really gearing up to try and take a chunk out of Sony sales . I’m guessing they will be in more of the lower end cameras . Not saying they can’t build the best or a great product.
Sony is the ff mirrorless leader that everyone has to catch up too. Nikon and Canon are ages behind at the moment for sure . Nikon will have a new mount and lenses out . I believe they will put out the main most widely used Pro lenses first . Then let folks use the adapted lenses while they build a solid lineup. Nikon knows lenses and I think what they will put out for their mirrorless bodies will be spectacular.
As for Fuji vs Sony or any of the other companies. Well Fuji has worked on capturing the apsc market and doing it with the old style film cameras simplicity. The new XH-1 is difficult though. And using a camera is a personal preference for sure . Fiji’s build quality is above Sony’s that’s a fact not an option. So is Nikon and Canons . Sony is pushing to build better quality cameras as of late though. The A9 seems really nice .

CatMarley. Yes third party folks WILL make lenses for any new Nikon and Canon mirrorless, BUT that takes development time and money, so be realistic enough to understand in the beginning these new mirrorless cameras will have limited native mirrorless lenses for them (Nikon is talking about three, maybe four mirrorless lenses to start with) . And that is long before ANY third-party lens makers will have access to these NEW lens algorithyms and such to make them work. It takes more than just slapping a new mount on an existing third-party lens folks. No different that the time it took third-party lens makers to develop, test and market E-Mount lenses for Sony. Wont happen overnight, never has, never will, bet the farm on that. Maybe if you start up a fund and send in Nikon and Canon fanboys' money, you will get faster lens development, testing and manufacturing from each Third-party lens makers. Cheers

I would imagine one of the selling points in the beginning of the new cameras will be lens availability from 3rd party. Nikon would be very slow to sell if it offers very few lenses, but would sell much better with the help of the 3rd party manufacturers. If Nikon were wise, it would have the mount specs and prototype already out to the 3rd party guys before they even market the camera body. This is especially true if the camera is intended for pro level buyers. They (Nikon/Canon) are much more likely to sell if they know there will be a bunch of Sigma's and Tamron's top lenses available for the new box! In the long term they will make lenses that will outclass the competition because they will be specially configured for the camera processor, and they will not lose much by letting the 3rd parties in for an early bonanza. And short term it will mean much quicker sales of the new body.

Lol!!! You are funny.

No company wants another one to make money. Nikon is in the business to make profit and lots of it. Nikon would be stupid to give out the tech to other lens makers. While it is going to happen, third party companies will eventually release their line of lenses, but that will be a while.

Look at Panasonic and Olympus-they share the mount, yet refuse to make their lenses compatible with with each other’s special features.

CatMarley, maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I am sure Nikon is counting on their folks with large Nikon lens collections to use the available adapters to get by while they and third party lens makers develop new mirrorless lenses. It took a while for third-party lens makers to get the Sony algorithms right before they could make third party lenses that actually worked well in E-Mount. Don't expect lightning to strike , and the entire photo world to completely change in an instant in the beginning of these highly anticipated releases, and then you wont be disappointed when everything you wish for is NOT all there in the beginning. That is just NOT realistic thinking. There will probably be teething pains for both Nikon and Canon here.

Hey I hope both Nikon and Canon succeed, I have said that all along. REAL competition will keep them all innovating and not resting on their laurels . I certainly don't expect Sony to move aside for either Nikon and Canon in the fullframe mirrorless market, especially with Sony's image sensor technology leadership. Odds are the new Nikon mirrorless will have its image sensor built by Sony, like the one in the D850. Cheers
