As inexpensive as SD and MicroSD cards have become, I suggest using the largest capacity card(s) your camera will allow. Then you just don't have to worry about space issues regardless how many JPG, RAW, or videos you shoot. I just returned from a week long trip with an Olympus TG-5 where I shot 46 videos, and 454 highest resolution JPG plus RAW stills. The entire 7 days resulted in 925 files totaling 11.8 GB... leaving 52.2 GB of unused space on my 64 GB SD card. That card will hold over 3100 highest resolution JPG+RAW images. You would have to shoot about 440 shots a day for 7 days to fill it. If you really want security from card failure, take along a WD Wireless Passport drive and copy your files to it at the end of each day.

Just for the record, I believe the paranoia about card failure is simply unjustified. I have so many in various devices it would take considerable effort to count them, and have never had one give me a problem.

I have had 2 quality cards fail, so for me what you refer to as paranoia is definitely justified. It only needs to happen once on a once in a lifetime trip on teh last day to convert you. Because we do daily backups we lost very little. Just remember to quote Joseph Heller "Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't after you."

How much does SD storage cost compared to the trip?

When you decide how much storage you need, double it.

I can't believe all this discussion that is not pertaining to your question. If you shot JPEG photo file format you can probably get by with just one 32 GB media card (SD or Compact type memory cards). If you are shooting RAW format I'd surely take 2 - 32GB memory cards. It is that simple....!

Good luck and have a fun picture filled trip. Take many photos....

When I was in the Galapagos Islands several years ago before my D800, D850 and D5, I shot shy of 3000 pictures in RAW on multiple 32GB, 16GB and a few 8 GB. Each day I copied all of the images to a hard drive but did not delete them from the card. If you absolutely had to, I would format in the camera and reuse the card if necessary. I personally would take for my cameras about 6-7 64GB or 3-4 128GB cards.

Jeff, we don’t know what kind of camera he is using. If he had your collection of shooters I would have advised differently, but if he had your cameras he would not be asking the question as he would have known. For most shooters your approach an be way too much. With 2 SD or CF cards he’ll be just fine. However I shoot somewhat like you and sometimes will take a backup device and more mem cards than I need. They are light weight and take up very little suitcase room.... Guess I have said about more than necessary. I think he needs a simple answer and that is what I gave.... have a good day and may your next shoot be great..... Stu

Just don’t by off brand cards.... San Disk or Lexor only........ the chance of a bad card if formatted in his cameta is as possible as him dropping his Camera overboard. I prefer San Disk personally...
Just a last minute thought... Stu

"Since I shoot in RAW, which everyone should be doing, my average file size for each exposure is about 42 Mb. So, 1500 + 200 exposures = 1700 exposures multiplied by 42,000,000 bytes each = 7,140,000,000 (7.14 Gb). So I could get by with a 8 Gb (16 Gb just in case) flash memory card, but I normally have 256 Gb cards in my camera anyway. Many photographers use one flash card for each day of shooting, which lowers the minimum size requirement."

I believe that your math is off by a factor of 10. You would need 71.4 GB. 42MB = 0.042GB. 0.042*1,700 = 71.4GB.

Thank you for the correction. You are correct. So he needs a 128 Gb card for the week. It's a good thing I use big cards when I travel or I could be up the creek without a paddle!

I know there are many variables that I can't answer. And, of course, each person shoots differently. I would say that I'll take a lot of pictures. (This being a first time there... I don't really know)

I already have a 16G and an 8G. (I loaned my daughter another 8G for her Africa trip on Sat.)

Thanks for your input.

Knowing what you will be able to see and do on an Alaskan cruise, and seeing that you are using a 16 and 8 right now, with no other given parameters, I would suggest two 32Gs and shooting on at least the finest JPEG setting. Remember that many of the excursions will give you the best photo opportunities since you are on a cruise. Hopefully you will get a chance to see and experience humpback whales bubble netting. It is always "luck of the draw" on that.

I'm taking a 7-day Princess Alaska Cruise with 3-day land add-on next month, and probably moderate-level in number of shots taken--probably 200-500 per day, depending on what's happening, but I know i will be able to delete many of them each evening. Because I have them, I'm taking 1-16 GB, 2-32 GB, and 1 64 GB SD card for my Canon SX60. I may shoot jpg-only for some well-lit casual shots, but mostly RAW+jpg. Since I have several SD cards, I'll probably use one of the 32 GB cards for onboard shots, the other for excursions and the land add-on, expanding to the others if I fill either of the first two. I don't really expect to use the 64 GB at all, but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it--and it doesn't take up much room or weight in my camera bag! I'm not taking a computer so I don't plan to back photos up, except to use wi-fi to transfer some jpg's to my phone (another 64 GB chip) to share on the trip on a slightly larger screen.

Probably not nearly enough but without knowing your camera and what mode you're shooting in (raw, jpeg) it is hard to say. My average file size is about 70mb. If you're shooting jpeg it will be a lot less. But on my trip to Alaska 11 years ago my average file size was about
5mb. And I used up a lot more the 24G. I was shooting only jpeg then.

One other thought - SD cards are very cheap compared to your cruise tickets. Don't scrimp.

Took a 7 day Alaskan cruise last year and took almost 6000 picts. I had 4 32g cards and my laptop. I uploaded my picts every day just in case. I agree with everyone else. They're cheap. Dont skimp

I sent a private message with the following information.

Just completing an Alaska cruise, I took several cards along from 64gb to 128gb using 2 Nikon D850's.

My procedure was to shoot all day and then down load the files to my laptop and then format the cards for the next day's shooting.

This and formatting the cards protected the files from getting corruption and potentially loosing access to them.
